Re: Ebay armor
Had an issue at the shop, and didn't get to go, but I remember this guy from the early 90s. He had a Stuart that he sold for $25k that I am sure he regrets letting go for that.
His place is only 2 hours away so I'll swing by. I have to go to ATL and see Jason first.

Re: Ebay armor
Please take a look at the DUKW he has for sale too while you are there. The engine bay shot he posted does not look anything like a DUKW. I've owned 2 DUKWs and the bays are big with straight side walls and don't have coil spring humps on each side of the motor or pressed sheet metal cross braces.
Thanks David

Re: Ebay armor
Maybe you can school me on the NAPCO conversion?
Here is a photo of an M8 I took in Latham NY. The owner mentioned a diesel conversion and Peruvian service but nothing about modifying the hull:

Re: Ebay armor
The NAPCO conversion has the rear section where the vent is extended about 12 inches and crude weld across the top of the rear hull just behind the engine door covers to allow for a long diesel and Allison transmission. the photo you showed me is NOT a NAPCO conversion.....the radiator grill would be moved back 12 inches farther from the two side fenders than shown in the picture. I don't have any pictures of the one I owned - I bought it without looking closely and was unhappy that it was not 'original' and sold it fast a reenactor that didn't care. NAPCO I believe was I Wisoconsin or Michigan and did a bunch of conversion of M8s to diesel for south and central American countries in the 50s and early 60s. the link below is about NAPCO

Re: Ebay armor
OK, the 70K for the M8 is obviously rather high, but why not a single bid on the Halftrack?

Re: Ebay armor
If that M8 had a JXD engine and a M8 armored car transmission it would have been a bargain at $70k. Last one I saw (without alive gun) sold in northern CA for over $80K more than a year ago. Live 37mm gun one would bring $92-94K in a retail sale if the guy was ot pressed for cash and shopped it around.

Re: Ebay armor
never saw the inside....so that's a big factor. No live gun I presume. the barrel alone if the one it it is not live is a $8,000-9,000 deal these days. If the engine and trans were no JXD and correct for the M8, then they would have to be replaced. Seen JXDs for $1,200, never looked at M8 transmissions....but guessing $1500 in Europe. $55-60K would be a reasonable price......
to get to the $90K number it needs a live 37mm gun, barrel ring and block.....$24,000. Engine and trans plus isntllations $10k-12k....so backing those items out of what was described.....I get the $55 number.....Interior parts are expensive too. Radio $1,000
My comment was that an M8 with the all bells and whistles is a $90k machine. (was not say8ng that one was worth even the $70k)
Willing seller plus willing buyer = value....Ebay is not the place to sell high dollar stuff. Generally, those types of sales are best done face-to-face with the buyer looking closely at his specific use and the fitments in the vehicle...scammers on ebay on high dollar stuff

Re: Ebay armor
Dan, does that also factor in the beast needs some form of restoration, or at least many cosmetic operations to bring it to the $90k price? The heavy stuff is always more costly to address just due to the equipment needed to move things around.

Re: Ebay armor
That's why I said I never saw interior shots. If that is all missing, I'd say drop the price another $12k-15K. Painting the outside is a nothing; tires are $1500 for a set, brake job is $1000 for new brake cylinders (if you find the cores are good), hydrovac is unavailable so may need replacing (no kits either); .
Still, in all, a totally restored M8 with live gun is a $90K vehicle as long as nicely restored, not perfect, but all there and working. Price drops from there. Seems to me though that any running example of an M8 with correct running gear (JXD and M8 transmission) that stops and drives and has tires on it is worth $40k-$45K as a starting point for a trick M8.
M8s are the only wheeled US armor besides Staghounds with a turret on the roof....unless you are going British Ferret or Lynx , Humber, Daimler or AEC and those are rare in the UK and the price will be much higher than an M8 and snapped up by the Brits themselves. Staghounds are at least 100 times more rare than M8s and priced accordingly. Scout cars and half tracks are kool but no turret though you could put a French 75 on a halftrack and have a nice machine...again more than $100K because the gun is incredibly rare. Halftrack with quad 50, high kool factor even without a turret but again approaching $100K even with dummy guns (the guns are outstripping the HT prices themselves)(four semi-50s is a kool $25K)(four descent dummies is $12K).
Sooo, bottom line - M8 project vehicles are likely to be $40K-$45K needing a $45K restoration (considering parts prices) Just go to the link on BIG D's M8 restoration and see what you think about restoration costs and the value of a fully, super restored M8...he'll never sell that for below the $100K number and likely more......"Restoration of Ford M8 armoured car U.S Ordnance number 7373". Stepping up from wheeled armor to fully tracked is a quantum jump...cheapest nice Stuart I've ever seen was $250K and I believe all the project tracked armor is now gone and already restored or mostly there. Shermans needing a restoration are $350K; Hellcats $350K. Armor is not a cheap hobby

Re: Ebay armor
Everything that you said is keeping me at the M3A1 Scout Car level, and even that will be a few x $10k to restore even with what I have. Looking forward to it though. Thanks for the excellent insight and having seen your collection you are speaking from experience and cash out-flow

Re: Ebay armor
I was informed of a Duster minus powertrain for $35k. There are barrels, but no indication of rings and blocks. SO, while not WWII, it perpetuates what's been said above about tracked armor.
