Plumb 1944 pick / mattock

Post by Beers » Fri May 18, 2018 6:32 pm

A family member grabbed this for me from a neighbor who was clearing out some “junk” from the garage.

Were any of these ever issued in MV kits, or just for GI carry?

11.5” end-to-end

Thanks,
Paul

I think it was issued to 1 member of a squad for digging foxholes. Nice find!

Thanks Luke, figured as much. Too small for carrying anywhere but on someone’s back. Now to dig up an original handle, won’t be too hard to find, there are still a bunch out there. To think this was about two minutes from the garbage can...

The 5 pound pick/mattocks are installed on the Pioneer racks of dodges, etc. These mini ones, were for Infantry use, I suppose. Infantry was not one of my 3 branch choices. They actually have to carry everything around on their backs, whereas we carried everything in the bustle racks. I remember more than once, blasting down the road in convoy, in freezing rain, heaters putting out a nice warm breeze, and the Infantry slogging in the mud beside the road, backs seemed almost breaking under a huge ruck sack, looking up at us with a "F you" blank stare.
I respected them though.
