GPW Spare Parts Kit Tag

Post by Myers » Wed May 02, 2018 1:20 pm

Does anyone reproduce the GPW spare parts kit tags? I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

If not, would any members with an original tag care to have it scanned? It would be pretty simple to reproduce if a clear image was available.

Thanks

These GPW tags are nice......Is there a MB spare parts kit TAG (or reproduction)?

Hi Chuck,

I was told that the UK run was rather small and none have been available for sometime. Do you know if Kevin still makes them?

Actually I don't know if Kevin still has them or was making them any longer.

As far as the MB Spares Kit goes, I would check the Lloyd books to see....I don't have them to check myself.

I am still of the opinion that at least at Ford....the black asphaltic boxes Ford used were to get an assembled kit to the individual factories and from there the contents were put into the glove box and the box was either recycled for something or trashed. I don't know it for a fact, but perhaps the boxed kit went into on of those crates that carried things when a jeep was crated and they were subsequently put into the glove box at the other end.

However...for the GPW, you can't fit the contents into the box if the individual boxes are cosmolined! The individual lamps ARE cosmolined.
Furthermore, if a box has a Ford packing tag on it, it is a replacement, not a factory boxed item. Remember, at Willys they did all this differently so don't try to apply the "Ford Style' to the MB spares kit items!

I am putting together a spares kit for a stateside GPW, so I was going with the bag only. Any idea if a bagged kit would also have the tag, or were they just for the boxed sets?

I believe that the tag goes with the tool bag ....

I say this because the first item on the tag is the fan belt which does NOT fit into the box anyway. I would include the tag in the bag unless someone believes it should be tied to the outside of the bag when the drawstrings are pulled tight.

For that matter, I don't even know if the tag was packed into the box or met the contents including the fan belt when the contents were put into the bag to go into the glove box. Remember to include your bag with the keys in it and for an early GPW, both the Parts and the Maintenance Manuals in there with the bag. Later jeeps probably had a TM 9-803 in there?

Much of this is not heavily supported by enough evidence as no crated GPWs have been available to check on and some items were reportedly removed from jeeps to the motorpool in WWII so things like the Spares Kits might never have made it to the Surplus sales post-WWII. The black asphaltic Ford boxes with spares in them have shown up but they are few and far between.

This reminded me Chuck of a interesting topic that you discussed before ...

Yes it is true that on the Tools Forum as well as others, we often post OPINIONS and state them as that.... unless we provide exact documentation to support the statement. As far as the Spare Parts Tag goes, in response to Mr. Myers, I posted a LOGICAL assumption that was not offered as proof of diddly-squat. I merely offered an OPINION where the tag would be found/used.

Anyone else caring to offer a better OPINION, please do join into the discussion as I'm all ears on the subject! I have two GPW spares kits and a couple of the reproduction tags and certainly would not want to misrepresent where they should be used.

I appreciate everyone's responses. As Chuck says, there is no harm in speculating so long as it's made known what the opinion is based on (fact or theory)

Would you mind scanning the reproduction tag? I can get copies made, I just need a clear scan.
