Fire Nozzle Adaptor

Post by pjones » Thu Apr 19, 2018 5:38 pm

Thanks to the work of Greg and Fred we have a very good timeline of the Willlys on board tool kit and when components were added or removed. Unfortunately we have less information about the GPW on board kit but can surmise that Ford followed changes made at Willys soon thereafter. I recently came across an Army Motors article that may provide additional information. According to this article (Sept '42 issue) which refers to an article in the July '42 issue that indicated that this adaptor was left out of some Willys and Ford tool kits delivered to the field. Unfortunately the reason isn't specified but for it to affect Willys and Ford tool kits I can only assume it was a production problem/inability of the manufacturer to meet demand. So it appears to me unless you guys interpret it otherwise that some Willys and Ford jeeps left the factory without a Fire Nozzle adaptor and that one could leave this adaptor out of their mid '42 Factory set for a Willys or Ford jeep toolkit.

What a great bit of detective work Phil! Interesting that theirs is "adaptEr" with an "E" not an "O". Dictionaries allow both it seems.

I'm willing to bet that if current military manuals were written this way, we would get an improved amount of compliance! Our older generation knew that there are multiple types of learners within their ranks, so making this useful knowledge easy to comprehend is just fantastic! I have to get some of these Army Motors magazines; they appear to be hilarious "Honey"

Phil, thanks for bringing the subject back. The interest for this adapter kind of decreased, but there was a time when this little bugger was all the rage.
A very costly item, and whenever I could buy one I jumped on it, with my toolkits in mind.

Interesting Luca. Identical verbiage though a later date. I wonder why they referred to it as a "Ford grease gun adapter" in the Army Motors article? I don't know about you but I may use this article and your (Chucks) document to leave this sometimes pricey item out of my early war factory kits from time to time.

Phil, there was a previous Army Motors article in which it was announced the Willys adapter...

From memory, it had been posted somewhen during some early discussion on this costly little thing.

Do you remember how you purchased your first one? :)

And when talking adapters, it always comes to my mind the ultra rare special adapter with government stock number...
