Hi
Luca is a good guy
The tool sets he puts together and the prices he ask for them are fair and 10 times better than the auction site..
and the tool info on the on the INK STAMPED IRWIN screwdrivews pictures he has posted nice
Inn my opinion he deserves credit for his shearing info to us all.
Cheers From Sunny Oslo

Anyone looking for a tool kit should look long and hard at what Luca has to offer and I wish I had know about G503 when I was putting a kit together as it can be one stop shoping for decant correct items from people like Luca and others who know their stuff.
I still look every day. Last week I found this buy it now listed at 2:15 AM and I grabbed it just before Phil saw it. It will be going right into the Jeep’s toolset. It had been used to stir paint but those paint traces eventually cleaned off.

This will find a spot in one of my kits to just add that little extra touch.

There was a time, and that was not such a long time ago, when just as a couple of other gee friends I was very happy to spot on e-bay any
11" Irwin stamped on shank!
How times have changed!

Claus,
Nice find. Congratulations. The ink stamped versions seem to be turning up more frequently. Perhaps the “market” will determine some new pricing for these gems. Of course pristine/“as new” condition versions of these will command the higher prices.
I still find it comical that one can still find shank stamped versions being listed on the auction site as “for the jeep” and the seller asking for high dollars for what we know is not the correct choice for a WWII Irwin screwdriver. However, the auction site has always been that way.

The Irwin stamped on shank has been considered not only correct, but actually the correct choice for ages.henry501 wrote: ↑Wed May 23, 2018 7:36 pm

When the WOA drawing came out, everyone was after Irwins without government stock number. There was even someone selling them as supposedly sourced from military surplus, go figure!
The knowledge of Ink stamped on wood as the correct choice is relatively recent, and not all the ebay sellers are aware of the change in consensus.
Some of them just sell junk, and will keep screwing gullible purchasers, but some are in good faith.

Guys, did I miss something? While I have no doubt that Ink stamped Irwins are preferred What is the definitive evidence that shank stamped Irwins are incorrect?henry501 wrote: ↑Wed May 23, 2018 7:36 pmI still find it comical that one can still find shank stamped versions being listed on the auction site as “for the jeep” and the seller asking for high dollars for what we know is not the correct choice for a WWII Irwin screwdriver. Re: IRWIN (Ink stamped on wood) screwdrivers
With the caveat that "definitive" and "settled" are subjective (who would even be the arbiter of something like that...?), there is ZERO doubt in my mind that Irwin screwdrivers with ANY stamping on the shank (e.g., IRWIN, IRWIN USA, IRWIN US of A, and IRWIN US of A GOV. STOCK # 41-S-1076) are post-war.
From my perspective, the first few nails in that coffin were hammered in by Cliff (Hartofoak) and Hinrik Steinsson (Viking27) in their seminal and handlebreaking work on cast markings and the subsequent work and analysis done by others on their thread to expand their discovery. That thread, linked here, proves, without a shred of doubt, that the cast markings under IRWIN screwdrivers with stampings on the shank DO NOT MATCH the cast markings under IRWIN screwdrivers with ink-stamped handles. In my interpretation, that proved that they were clearly not made at the same time as each other. Furthermore, in my analysis, a clear pattern emerged from that work, showing the evolution of the cast markings. ALL of the cast markings on IRWIN screwdrivers with stamped shanks clearly came after the early ink-stamped handle cast markings. Furthermore still, IRWIN screwdrivers with no stampings on the shank and no ink-stamped handle DO MATCH the cast markings under IRWIN screwdrivers with ink-stamped handles, further sealing the stamp shanks' fate, and illustrating that the next best thing to an IRWIN screwdriver with an ink-stamped handle is an IRWIN screwdriver with NO stamp on the shank and a blank handle (ink almost certainly worn off).
From my perspective, the final nails in that coffin were hammered in by Fred and I, in White Vol 5 Chapter 40, in our analysis of original Willys factory and Ordnance Dept documents during the M38 pre-production period, specifically dated January and April 1950, proving without a shred of doubt that IRWIN screwdrivers with the IRWIN US of A GOV. STOCK # 41-S-1076 stamping were placed in M38 toolkits.

Re: IRWIN (Ink stamped on wood) screwdrivers
Greg,
I agree with all of that. But what evidence do we have that they didn't start stamping the shank Irwin US of A in for example '44 or '45? Couldn't cast markings have changed over the course of the war? Do we have war era Irwin catalogs, '42, '43, '44, or '45, that show no stamping on the shanks?

Re: IRWIN (Ink stamped on wood) screwdrivers
Phil, my 1942 catalogue shows only Irwin ink stamped with a hex shank. This would be my choice for a 41 or early/mid 42 Jeep.
I would agree that no evidence exists for a shaft marked Irwin during the war.
