Oil Pitcher/Measure Thread

Post by Rustman » Mon Jan 08, 2018 7:20 am

Buried here on page 23 of the Early Bird thread is a discussion on oil measures.

http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f= ... &start=330

For reference the modern description on McMaster Carr/Global Industrial etc. refer to them as a "Pitcher". A new one is about $60 for 1qt and they go up from there...

Here is one I recently picked up. I plan to clean, over paint with some new aluminum paint and press into service.

It seems to read "1/4" Gallon" instead of 1 qt. Seems pedantic to me. Is a Broookins and based on photos in the other thread appears to my eye to be a match for the 41-M-940.

Matt,

Nice find. You are good to go on the 1 quart (1/4 gallon) measure/pitcher for your collection.

Thank you,
Henry

Hope Roger (Silly's MB) won't mind me pasting this

here, as it may help in the search for oil measures for various "sets" since "Balcrank"/"The Cincinnati Ball Crank Co." is a recognized supplier and a couple of the possible candidates are pictured in the ad above.

Thank you,
Henry

I see the "Cincinnati" on the Brookins' measures. Is "Ball Crank" or "Balcrank" embossed on them somewhere? My recollection is no, which is why I didn't realize they were the Mfgr until I saw Roger's ad. But I may have missed it.

First I've seen was the ad. Looks like from the ad that it was a case of one manufacturer with two brands.

All,

Sorry I have not responded further yet. I'm trying to collect all of my observations and research to possibly establish a timeline of production on these measures and the possible features to look for to distinguish wartime manufacture from pre-war or post-war. Part of my trouble is that I cannot find any info. on when Brookins Manufacturing Co. merged with or was taken over by The Cincinnati Ball Crank Co.

Thank you,
Henry

Henry,

I'm back in the United States and stopped by the antique place. Measure was still there. It's 1.25 gallons. Here are pictures. This is certainly a post-war example. 46544 is the zip code for Mishawaka.

Matt,

That is definitely a postwar measure as you’ve already surmised from the decal with the zip code. Also I’ve never seen a decal without the zip code so...

All,

I know I also promised to provide additional research/ findings to better enable us to get the correct era measure(s) for our collection. That is still in the works.

Thank you,
Henry
