What underline H spares do you have laying about?
None in 1/4-inch drive, sorry.

To my eye, it looks like the handles in the box are the flex head (breaker) and the sliding T bar.
That makes three of us! \/

Maybe a sliding tee handle, with the drive head slid all the way to the left? That's what it looks like to me.

Hi Wingnut... Sure does look like a Tee handle.

The 1/4 " drive Snap On sockets sets were introduced only in 1945: a fact that should be kept in mind when assembling an earlier than 1945 General Mechanic Toolbox.
Not true, Luca. They were introduced in 1944. They were introduced in a catalog in late 1944 (specifically, Catalog Q, printed in December 1944) in preparation for the 1945 calendar year, but they were assuredly in production well before that. I had a complete Snap-On 1/4-inch drive set in my third GMTK and every socket and handle was stamped with an "E" (1944) except the ratchet, which was rare 1943 production. And I have seen many other sets and pieces with "E" (1944) codes. Link to my "Living History" kit, with an inventory, photos, and links to additional photos here.

I took the 1945 from the site dedicated to Snap-On collecting. Now that I read your explanation I stand corrected. Thank you.

I only own a 9/32 set, which I keep with my small collection of old tools without any connection to military tools.

For my keeper GMTK, which one day will cross the ocean, I have decided with Phil Jones to use the Duro Chrome set.

Your caution was apt, just a year off. Snap-On is not a good MVMTS choice.

I did just acquire a fascinating piece of Snap-On history relevant to us that I will share soon.

Hi all,

Regarding the Craftsman tools:
So, do I go with the TM list or the picture?
A Tee handle is now on the wants list.

I recall that the box is Plumb related, which is related to the big box, being a Plumb box (model 9909 if I recall correctly). P&C is probably a more likely candidate for this toolbox it seems, but they also seem to be prohibitively scarce, I do want to complete this set.

Jason,
Regards 3/4"dr, I have settled on Circle K as Craftsman did not have 3/4"dr. then, I believe, but S-K is related to Craftsman, can't remember how. Some of the sockets I have, missing ones are 1 1/2" and 1 13/16". I have yet to find an affordable drive. They are- cross bar dia 3/4" x 18" long, hinged handle 19" long, ratchet 20" long, extension 8 1/2" long. Anyone?

I definitely want to hold out for all Circle H tools in the socket sets (Circle K for 3/4"dr.). Thanks for your time.

Have a nice day.

Since that's the only tool shown in the figure that is not listed in the SNL, it doesn't do any harm in the way fewer or different tools shown in the figure than the SNL would. Take it out of your midget set, and you still have the SNL contents (hinge handle, tommy bar, and sockets) covered. Put it in your midget set, and it's merely extraneous at worst.

My one note of caution about it being a Sliding Tee is that none of the other socket drive sets (3/4, 1/2, or 3/8) has a Sliding Tee. They all seem to have a Ratchet and a Hinge Handle, except the 3/8-inch drive set, which has a Speeder and a Hinge Handle.

(Another infuriatingly clear as mud TM!) :)

??!! Craftsman Circle K is 3/4-inch drive and it was made by S-K for Sears & Roebuck.

Looking forward to it! My 1/4” drive Snap-on set is mostly from 1944.

Just in case you missed this post here are a few more 9/32" flex-heads if you want them ....
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=285629&hilit=flexheads
Speaking of Snap-on, i was lucky enough to receive a box of repack 9/32” flex handles and crossbars, thanks to Hartofoak’s generous offer. Fortunately the 1945 Snap-on crossbars fit both the 9/32” and 1/4” flex handles. I also discovered that the Plomb WF crossbars are virtually identical to the Snap-on bars. Here are my various Snap-on sets displaying their new crossbars. The more complete 1/4”set is posted above.

It’s always been a disappointment to Plomb collectors that it was impossible to put together a GMTK correct 1/4” drive set due to the fact that Plomb didn’t offer a 3/8” 8 Point socket. Here is a Plomb 1/4” drive set that would be impossible to dispute as being wartime correct.

Thanks, Guys! I was pretty happy to get it. It’s a nice counterpoint to my other Plomb set. I still need a 3/16” socket for it. I have a 7/32” socket as a placeholder.

I settled on Craftsman underline circle H sockets for this tool box.

This what I have collected thus far. The 8pt is wrong for this set.

Can anyone help?
Hi Sam. I was digging around in my spares bin over the weekend and I found a Craftsman (H) sliding T for your set. Also found 2 sockets (1/4" and 5/16") but both are 8 point and don't work for your set.

Here's a pic of the bar.

Let me know if you're interested.

Hi Jason,

Yes, thanks for that. I am interested in the sliding T.
It would need to be posted to 21666.
Please PM price and can I paypal to you?
Thanks.

Does anyone know if Blackhawk, Williams, or Wright supplied 1/4" sets?

I don't know about Wright. In fact, I don't know if Wright even manufactured a midget set in this era. But Blackhawk and Williams definitely supplied 1/4-inch drive sets. Both are cited in the March 1945 ORD 5. Not sure what the application for the Williams was, but the 100-pc Blackhawk Master Wrench Set in the tank wrecker included a Blackhawk 1/4-inch drive set.

A link to my Blackhawk Master Wrench set thread is here.

I KNOW I posted several charts on this thread, one of which included specs and model numbers for several mfgrs, including Williams. Now they're gone! I am infuriatingly confused.

Edit: I figured it out. This is a different midget thread. The one with all the info and tons of examples is here.
