The Wright Stuff

Post by mrbill » Thu Dec 31, 2015 11:01 am

I decided to try and put together a GMTK appropriate 1/2" set of Wright sockets/ratchet/breaker as a long term project. Based on how seldom anything Wright shows up here it may take a while! ;) So, if you have any orphans that you'd like to part with let me know.

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks Phil. I also had it in my mind that it was not. Was going to check old posts tonight but you saved me some time.

I found a nice Wright 1/2" drive ratchet at the flea market last weekend, but the vendor wanted $15 for it. I passed on it since I already have a drawer full of old ratchets. Sorry Bill. I'll pick up the next one I see!

Hi Bill,
I found a couple more Wright items. The GMTK correct size is the 1-1/16" but I also have a 5/8" 8 point 1/2" drive socket and a 3/4" 12 point 3/8" drive socket. They are all up for grabs.

I edited the subject so that this thread can be used to document the pieces I find and any Wright-related info that turns up.

Picked up this U-11 41-J-380 universal. No date code but it is U.S. stamped.

Found a few new pieces. First are the -43 dated S-159 13/16" (41-W-3021) and the 42+ dated S-160 7/8" (41-W-3023) sockets. In addition to the mystery of the -/+ prefix/suffix there is the "AC" stamping to consider now, too.

Second, are two 41-B-307 N12A 5" extensions. Neither are date marked but both have the "U.S." stamping.

Wingnutt had a plausible theory regarding the "AC" markings on the Wright tools:
I believe it's a strong probability that the "AC" may be a reference to Air Corps. In the Civilian Production Administration (formerly War Production Board) War Supply Contracts books, "AC" is the code for "Air Corps" in the index up front. Wright Tool and Forge Company had three contracts with the Air Corps during the war:

$206,000 awarded November 1941
$1,044,000 awarded February 1942
$419,000 awarded October 1942

The last two contracts ran until late 1943 and early 1944 respectively. The date codes and the Air Corps contracts seem to align.
It makes sense to me. Now to find a good theory for the -/+ prefix/suffix!
