Sorry for the temporary Plomb derail on your Wright thread, but I thought that the two letter codes on some wartime Plomb were simply date codes. Maybe I just haven't run across Plomb with the AC code.

Yes Bill, apologies!! I didn't mean to derail your thread.......honest. Don, some are date codes and some aren't. I've decoded them for wartime on my site: http://toolarchives.com/plomb-2-letter-study

However, there are some tools where the code is not in the correct spot, or have the wrong finish to be wartime. You are correct though, most AC codes are date codes denoting January, 1943.

Haven't found any GMTK-size sockets but have been able to pick up a number of monstrous 3/4" sockets. Here's a carnival game arrangement of them.

I picked up another N-62 Wright ratchet locally over the weekend. It's obviously missing the center bolt/screw but the rest of the mechanism is in pretty good shape. I took the screw from my other N-62 and it fits as it should. Any ideas where to get a replacement? What is the proper name - bolt or screw? I looked on Fastenal, Bolt Depot, McMaster-Carr, etc. but don't see anything that looks like that. Worst case, if I can find something with the correct head and a long enough shoulder I could cut it to length and thread the end. Thoughts and suggestions, please.

EDIT: I think the screw/bolt is 5/16-24.

That's a tough one, Bill.
Here locally, we have a shop that specializes in vintage vehicle repair. My Dad will occasionally take his MG-TD there to get work done. I've seen old Indy cars, old British sports cars, Jeeps, trucks, all kinds of cool cars in there. Anyway, virtually all the stuff they work on will need stuff made. 1-off type things. They've got their own machine shop in house where they can do that type of stuff. Perhaps you have a similar shop in town that may be able to knock off a few of those for you?
Good luck!

I think it would be a 'slotted partially threaded pan head machine screw', but I can find one :)

I think your right that you could make one as long as you find the correct thread size and maybe just cut down a longer bolt and file the thread off of the neck.

Good luck !

I grabbed a 5/16-24 hex head bolt at Lowes this morning. It's definitely the correct thread size and will hold the ratchet together until I can find a better solution. I will take Jason's suggestion and ask around to see if there is a local machine shop that would make a few up.

The Wright collection grows a little. Most recent additions are a 3/4" N-320 ratchet dated -45, a MN-15 -44 dated 3/8" speeder and 3/8" MN-11 AC stamped tee courtesy of Tin Medic, the S-157 -44 dated GMTK appropriate 3/4" 1/2" drive socket I found recently, and an AD-394 -44 dated 1/2"-3/4" adapter.

Bill,

Those are some of the blackest black oxide finish tools I have ever seen. If you didn't know any better, you might think they were found in the basement of a house fire. Love 'em.

What are your thoughts on the 3/8 x 7/16 double end hex flare nut wrench in this post?

I was thinking Wright aircraft made by someone else, but now I am not so sure.

Greg,

I think the wrench looks like an older Cornwell line wrench. I believe I read somewhere (can't remember where) that Cornwell made some tools for Wright but, without proof that's just conjecture on my part.

That was my conjecture on my flea thread! I appreciate the independent confirmation. I've been looking for examples of that uneven model number marking, which I was sure is attributed to Cornwell, but I can't seem to find any now.

Although not GMTK, I had almost forgotten about some other 3/8" bits I picked up, too. (It pays to organize once in a while!) Mudbox provided a speeder that is identical to the first one - including the black oxide (lest we suspect Tin Medic might be an arsonist) but "AC" stamped. The long MN13A extension is "AC", the shorter MN22 extension is "AC 42+", flex handle MN17 is stamped "AC", universal MU50 is AC 42+, MS 55 is "AC", one MS57 is AC the other 42, the flex sockets (MU 55/57/56)are "US, "AC", and "AC 42+".

Added this 41-B-309 10" extension to the collection today. No date code but it has the U.S. marking.

So, yeah, I know I'm like the one person on the planet that is interested in Wright. But, someday another fool will come along and maybe these pictures will help them out in lieu of a catalog. I picked up this lot of 41-B-305 3/8" drive 6" extensions on eBay. You can still see the FSN on the little tags. They are covered in cosmoline and stamped "AC 43+".

The recent posts by d42jeep in mudbox's 2017 flea topic made me realize that I am an upper echelon collector now, too, by virtue of the 3/4" stuff I've been picking up along the way. Here's a list of the 41-W-2620 3/4" socket wrench set Wright items that I have:

Just one more bar and 3 sockets to go!
