Good point, Don. And who knows which trays are original to which boxes anyway. Heck, if not for very identifiable patina or dings etc, or something like that additional tray, you'd probably get them mixed up yourself. (I'd be tempted to put my Williams 3/8-inch drive set in the same box and really give my right arm (EDIT: dolly) a workout.

Yeah, it's funny that my best tray, which is now in my MVMTS, came in a box with a terrible exterior but a pristine interior.

I know what I would do. I would find a different tote-tray (I may have one) or drill an oiler hole in that tote-tray and weld in a piece of steel formed into a socket tray. And then I would paint it OD and distress it to look "preserved" like I did this one... :D

All of that "cheating" may seem incongruous with my research, analysis, etc, but I have always worn two hats. The knowledge base and discussions are impersonal; collecting and displaying is a different animal. It's nirvana when they agree, but they never do 100%. And one should never ruin the fun of the other in my book anyway.

Talking of welded modifications, my first MVMTS box has a welded-on hasp for a padlock. I'm still undecided whether to grind it off and fill the hasp hole, so it stays as received at present. I wonder if someone we know bought that FSN stencilled box Phil? At least we have the photographic evidence although not its provenance. Like so many subjects on the forum, the question I posed about FSN marked boxes (and tools!) could or should have a thread of its own as there appears to be lots of evidence both for and against specific examples. I remember posting a photo of an armourer's hammer that had both "TAXI" and FSN on it which may be unique.

Thanks for the reassurance about the FSN marked S-W "Migit" sets by the way. I was going to add that my FSN'd example had several sockets in it that had the supposedly 1940's inverted "V" (AA evidence) on them, which supports the wartime vintage. Perhaps it all comes down to treating each FSN'd item individually.

Wingnutt wrote: My Hamilton box with indisputable wartime markings does NOT have the embossed FSN. Now consider that along with the fact that the box illustrated in RAPD 50223 in the October 1942 SNL N-19 is clearly a Hamilton without an FSN embossed. Those two data points – historical document, and matching historical artifact - don't prove that embossed FSN Hamilton boxes are not wartime, but it sure does give more credence to Hamilton boxes without the FSN embossed. Those two data points and the fact that no other verified supplier (Union, McAleer) stamped or otherwise marked their boxes with an FSN, does give plenty of reason to question whether Hamilton embossing their boxes was a late war or post-war convention.
Another data point on Hamilton boxes: Brett Nicholl's stencilled "Machinists" box was embossed with the manufacturer and its FSN: 41-B-1840

That's a very interesting data point, Cliff, in the context of the mach. set FSN, which was stenciled on in the older nomenclature style. Not definitive, but interesting.

I'm going to cross-reference link that Special Armored Force Separate Battalion Carburetor Mechanic's toolbox here, so we don't lose track of it later, Cliff.

Not a GMTK box, I'm not sure it's even military, and probably post-war (no corner supports), but I spotted this very familiar but XXL version of our loveable 41-B-1840 at my flea market this past weekend. I didn't measure but it's at least twice as long, and also taller. As you can see, they added handles on the ends for a two-man lift and carry.

I know what you guys are thinking! Given the weight of a fully loaded GMTK - not a bad idea for the 41-B-1840!

And no, I didn't count the hinge elements! :)

Here's another box I was fortunate enough to come across on the auction site. These with original stenciling on them are very hard to come by.

Wonderful find Phil. We need to add it to the list of authentic stencilled GMTK boxes ...

I recently came across this box. Actually Dad and I were looking at a flea in Florida and I passed right over it without seeing it. Thankfully he did. The seller had an interesting story to tell about the box told after I told him what I thought it was. FWIW he said that it was his grandfathers and that he was a ww 2 vet.
