Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Greetings.
I picked up this fire extinguisher bracket today at the MTA Swapmeet in Sussex, NJ today. It is OD, and looks to be a little beat up, but unmolested, but I am unsure if it is correct for G503.
The top bracket is bent, but I have seen these identified as Ford WW2 in other spots on the Internet. JeffAz? Anyone else?

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Thats one of the correct ones Patrick. I have seen many like that on restorations over here in the U.K.

Mark - appreciate it.
The information on fire extinguishers and brackets leaves a bit to be desired.
This bracket should clean up nice I think.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Which FE is supposed to fit this bracket and be "WWII" factory installed on a jeep?

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Looks like a Pyrene type bracket to me - not original as far as I am aware.
Mark may have seen them fitted to jeeps over here though.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Guys , most of the fire extinguishers over here that are fitted on jeeps are Pyrene, hence these brackets. You can buy American types over here but they cost megabucks. You can get Pyrene ones over here costing £20 to £30, maybe a bit more for a gleaming polished one. An American type, well ive seen them selling for £120, upwards. I hope this clears up the confusion.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
No pics, however here is the info from the Final Draft of the GPW Restoration Guide set to be ready forsale from the MVPA later this year.
7.0.2 Fire extinguisher and bracket
General and Fyr-Fighter carbon tetrachloride pump-type extinguishers are considered to be correct. Later style Ford brackets are marked GAU and a part number.
Early-type fire extinguisher brackets have a single clip, later units use two clips.
Later FORD two strap bracket. Differs from WILLYS by the markings on the top.
Note GAU and part number. The changeover timeframe is March 43.
Your bracket is not factory correct.
As I said earlier in another thread, ALL proceeds go to the MVPA for their use. My way of giving back to the hobby

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Thanks Gents:
My current project is a Jan 1943 MB - with an early Type ACM1 tub. According to the Willys Master Parts manual, the correct extinguisher is a General Fire Truck Corp. NO. BF-100B or Fyr-Fighter Co. No. D-10-A, Willys Part A-616 with bracket.
As I understand it, the early production G503 had single strap brackets. Does anyone know with certainty what they look like? Pictures?
Thanks,
Patrick

Patrick,
Here is a link to my post regarding my Slat.

Scroll down to the bottom of page 1 and you'll see a few pics of what an early G503 (December 41) FE bracket should look like. Just know that the bottom "cup" is missing.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
I don't think this bracket is for a Pyrene extinguisher. The Pyrenes that I have seen have a doomed end and the bracket is similarly shaped. This bracket fits a flat ended extinguisher. I have seen a couple of different extinguishers with flat bottom brackets. Still working on it.
Little history: the Fyr-Fighter Co., which is listed in the original MB parts manual as a supplier of extinguishers, was founded by Roscoe Iddings after he worked for Pyrene in NYC. He founded Fyr-Fighter in 1916 and definitely provided fire extinguishers to the military during WW2. The Smithsonian has a couple of boxes of their trade catalogs - I suspect we could find the correct model of Fyr-Fighter extinguisher with a trip to DC.

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
I asked what vehicle this was for because it isn't the kind of bracket fitted at the factory for an MB or a GPW. As noted above, the Pyrene requires a cup-shaped bottom on it. This one-strap version does not have a continuous band that factory mounted FE brackets have, be they the one-strap or the two-strap versions. This one has a hinge on the strap.
While it may be for a different vehicle, I do not recall hearing that it was dated to WWII.
Here at a few WWII FE brackets and some FEs (and one pic of a Pyrene that isn't correct for a factory jeep use):

Re: Fire Extinguisher Bracket ID
Thanks for the pictures Chuck.
The one thing that makes all of this tough is that the manuals only mention the brand and model of fire extinguishers and that they come with "brackets". I guess we are relying on documenting what has been found on what we hope are "original" jeeps to make the determination of what goes on what vehicle.
The pictures from the early MB manuals are not so much help. Interestingly, the folks at Willys "manipulated" the original slat grill pictures in later Changes to both add a glovebox and also move the fire extinguisher. They did a nice job, but it is pretty obvious that they were "edited". To my eyes, the picture is of a Fyr Fighter extinguisher, but not the red cross that is typically identified as period correct. It also looks like the editors added "US" to appear embossed on the strap (2 strap mount).
Appreciate the input. I still find this subject confusing.
Regards, Patrick
