Question : I have a 12v timing light but no 12v battery at the moment and I'm on 6v (wife has run off with the car for a few days).

Can I use a 12v battery charger as the power source for the timing light ? Just hook the terminals together.

Your 12 Volt Charger just might do the job. It will do no harm trying.

REMINDER:
That eeek noise is creating enough heat to cook the insides of your starter. Go easy on it.

Well I must thank you all for the help.
I managed to find the marks on the flywheel, mark them and then marked the pulley at the front and the chain housing.
I used the hand crank hole to look through to line up the marks on the pulley and a nut on the casing. Perfect.
Even the strobe worked well on 6v. It was maybe 1° still too advanced and now it's perfect.
So I must have been running a good 3/4° advanced with the points. Explains the starter motor noise I guess.
Went for a good ride and it's so smooth. Idle is perfect and there are no gaps while accelerating.
So thanks guys. Learn't a lot and put it into practice.

Will have to check the state of the starter sometime though...

Factory spec Timing Marks and Timing Lights eliminate all guess work.

Adding a Timing Pointer to the MB/CJ-2A with the timing hole has to be one of the most convenient improvements and is hardly noticeable. Your Jeep will smile.
I'll bet 9 out of 10 persons will never notice it.
