1952 Willys parts
Hi guys, sure this question has been asked before but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for in the forums.
I've a 1944 Willys MB and have reciently picked up a military 1952 Willys (believe it's an MC? Is that correct?).
I brought it mainly for the engine but would like to know what other parts are interchangeable. I know gearbox, body and frame are different. Is the transfer case the same also the rear axel? The front axel steering mechanism is different but are the rest of the axel parts useable? Steering column? Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Rick

Re: 1952 Willys parts
Front engine plate will have to be changed, will need a CJ-2A Gear type front plate. Starter Ring Gear on M-38 has two types, 129 Tooth and 134 tooth, MB has 97 Teeth. steering column for M-38 is longer, transfer case is not interchangeable, rear axle housing is heavier duty (Spicer 44) and the ratio, 43:8 does not match 39:8 of the MB. Front axle of M-38 is also 43:8. Not much interchanges on axles, but the Brake shoes and Backing plates do interchange.
Tie rods and steering linkage will not interchange with MB. M-38 Springs require different Pivot Brackets, hole is smaller.

M38s (MC) are more rare than MBs and are very collectable. If yours is in half decent, then you should restore that and not strip parts off it that won't be correct for your MB anyway.

I`d go with dpcd67 opinon too !!
And anyway an M38 motor is not the same as an MB either !!!!
if your going to do something at least get it somewhat right !!!

Re: 1952 Willys parts
Both vehicles have their own appeal as they are from different eras. The difference is very noticeable once one has been seated in the drivers seat of both and had the chance to compare. The MB is a hot rod compared to the M-38, the M-38, being much heavier has a solid feel. Which one? They both have their place in the history of US Army MV's.
One of each would be my choice, but it could be expensive.

Re: 1952 Willys parts
The point is, do not destroy one potentially valuable vehicle just to get another one running, which will not enhance it's value anyway with all the incorrect parts from the M38. That would be going in the wrong direction, twice.

Hi guys guess I won't break the m38 down for parts then. Live in Kamloops BC (yeah that's in the great white north) if any of you guys want to pick up an M38 to save and restore message me.

Re: 1952 Willys parts
Is it one of the rare Ford produced M38s for the Canadian Army?
Might be worth a bit more to the right person.
Cheers

It's buried in a snow drift right now but yes I believe it is a Canadian Ford M38. When I can get it out I'll check the details and post it on the for sale forum

I am, or was, definitely interested; this is a super rare jeep you have. But then I looked at the map to see where you are.....if you can get it closer to the middle of the US, that would be good.

Sorry jeep will have to be local pickup only. I got my 44 MB from way down in Oregan which made for an awesome road trip.
