Ford engine grey -> RAL code (with original paint )

Post by Fabrizio » Sun Jan 08, 2017 2:16 pm

OK, I think I have gathered enough Ford parts with their original paint to try to match it to a RAL code.

The parts I have come from 3 different engines, one is a very well preserved july 45 engine, never painted over.
The other two parts come from unknown engines, were over painted, and have been sanded down and polished.
All pictures shot at the same time, using an iphone 6s under fluorescent light, night outside.

I have tested all RAL greys, and RAL7005 is, by far, the best match.
Here is what happens against all the original parts:
(I did place the camera to avoid light reflections each time)

What's interesting is that when you look at a 7005 chip alone, it looks way too dark, while when put on original parts....it's a little bit too light! Amazing to see how much the eye can get fooled.

7005 is not a 100% match, bit I think it is clearly an acceptable and correct candidate...I will myself go for it!

Hello Fabrizio

Thanks you for sharing this.

I also think it's a very accurate match, and will probably try (Ral 7005) it on a alkyde mat paint base.

I have always used Land Rover Light Grey from my local farm shop - it's relatively quick drying, oil and fuel proof, plus not very expensive.
Over the years it weathers well and as I'm rebuilding the motor, it will be on the agenda soon. I did look at Ferguson Tractor Grey which has a warmer tone to it, and as the Original "Fergies" were licence built Fords of the '40s, it would be logical to assume the colour would be good.
It is something I will check out.

Further to my last post, today as the weather is fine and sunny, I took my motor outside and after masking up various areas I didn't want to paint, gave it a couple of coats of Land Rover Grey implement paint purchased from my local Farmers Supply shop for £15 a litre. See:- www.sparex.com/
It is touch dry in a very short time and lasts very well as an engine paint.

Fiiine !
Nice job Rod.

Color looks to be very close to RAL 7005.

I think you might find that the grey colour used on the Ford engines is the same colour as used on the Ford 9N and 2N tractors and as such it can be bought still from places specializing in vintage tractor refurbishment, both here and in the States

I agree! From what I recall from Design school, the background absorbs colors from the foreground object.

For example, take a look at your blue chip against black and white. Notice how on a black background, the blue chip appears lighter. That's because it's absorbing any dark colors from the blue chip.

Here's a yellow-orange chip against two different backgrounds. The yellow background is absorbing the yellow from the chip, which makes the chip more orange:
