Re: Huge Warning My Friends!!!!!!!!
From what I can see, it looks like the shaft was machined from the forging. Not added. Should be ok. Does the backside look like there is no seam between the shaft and the head piece?

You got me worried man.Oilleaker1 wrote:Two members have had the same bad sector shafts sold by Omix Ada shear inside the Ross Box. They lost all steering immediately. See the thread and pictures on The CJ2A Page, Technical Info. Sticky. Do it now and save your life! I'm checking mine next. I know I replaced it, but not sure if it's Omix Ada or Crown. This is very serious. Not a joke. Oilleaker

Re: Huge Warning My Friends!!!!!!!!
Check very carefully.
The original sector shaft was a one piece machined forging whereas the replacement in question is made of 2 pieces [casting & shaft] incorporating welding.
A 'cheap' welded joined area that has not been properly normalized, is brittle & will break.
VERY, VERY dangerous & should not be used under any circumstances unless you & perhaps other innocents want to be viewing the inside of a casket.
Often original parts being discarded, for very minor wear are a considerably better prospect than re-pro look alikes that are just plain rubbish.

Thank's for the heads up. Big Brother does pay attention sometimes. Be thankful that somehow someone navigated the maze that made this issue come to a conclusion.

Re: Huge Warning My Friends!!!!!!!!
Unless the sector shaft where it rides in the bushings is worn down, you may be able to rotate the two "tits" on the base so any worn areas will no longer ride on the steering shaft. There have been some threads about this in the past but I don't have the links...
That way you can re-use the shaft with new bushings/seals/gaskets and you can actually tighten the NUT behind the Pittman arm to where it should be, not like the repops do!

Re: Huge Warning My Friends!!!!!!!!
I would trust Crown before Omix, but even the Crown sector shaft appears to be two piece. The replacement I have for mine is Crown, but I haven't installed it yet.
I am interested in what Chuck Lutz mentions about rotating the followers. Would like to know how to go about doing that. Are they a sweat fit?

Re: Huge Warning My Friends!!!!!!!!
After reading through some other posts I am not so sure about trusting Crown anymore either.
I think I'll look for an original sector shaft that isn't completely worn out. It would be better to have a little slop in the steering than to have the darn thing break under stress.
The one that came out of mine shows some wear on the followers, and worm, but with new bushings, new bell crank and bushings, new drag link, and new tie rods, I think I can live with the remaining slop until I find a better original sector shaft.

The manufacturers name for those two "thingys" as "Pins" The official Ross Description for the type steering gear used in the Jeep is "Ross Cam and Twin Pin".

Re: Huge Warning My Friends!!!!!!!!
Good to know proper terminology. I simply called them "followers", for lack of a better term, and that is what they do.
I read a couple of older posts about pressing the pins out and turning them before putting them back, but I am not sure I want to try that.
I have had steering parts fail while the vehicle is moving and it is no fun. I once had an old IH Scout, I pulled off the freeway to get some gas, when I pulled back onto the road a tie rod broke, and the wheels splayed out. Lucky for me that it happened as soon as I pulled out onto the road. Had it happened at freeway speed I would probably have been killed.
So, as I said, I would rather get the best old sector I can find rather than a reproduction, or a repaired one unless someone can completely convince me the repair is safe.
