Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Jeff, that looks like a second style CJ case with the 1 1/8 “ hole for the intermediate shaft? Also, I associate the “squared holes” brake drum as being CJ so this makes sense. It looks like they must have reset the serial number on the “-2” cases (since yours is a 5 digit number), so I can only deduce that the serial numbers were reset with the “-1” cases also.
Yes, your photos are indeed helpful....thanks for posting.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Good. Glad it helps. It came to me as part of a jeep salad. I thought it was an M38 case until I read this thread. If you you look closely you can see it's attached to a T84 so I'm glad it's actually compatible with it. So from a practical standpoint this is an "in the family bolt-on" improvement with lower gearing in low range and more durability with the larger intermediate shaft. Thanks

Michael-0, same situation here.
C-18-15-10-4 with 3/4 shaft, no T90 cutouts, and holes pattern match the 10-1, Spicer logo, Brown-Lipe tag J283808
...attached to Slat T84, cast data 12/16, assembly stamp 1-42
So, what's going on? This doesn't line up to timelines?

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Oddball, like my -4 case, yours is also a post war housing but machined for the T-84 and still retaining the 3/4” shaft hole. The big Spicer diamond cast on the rear of the housing is a glarring giveaway that it was manufactured post war.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
I've got a couple C-18-15-10-1 cases that I'm trying to place in the timeline. One has a serial number J4719 with a 3/4" shaft and the machining for the T90. According to the numbers listed on the first page of this thread it seems it would be appropriate for an early CJ2A. The other case is just totally covered in crud. After a little scraping I was able to determine the serial number is J414537 with a 3/4" shaft and just the T84 machining. It also has an internal expanding hand brake mounted. I'm assuming that this is a late war MB transfer case. Do we know how high the serial numbers went before they were reset with the T90 machining?

No such gearbox as a T-18,Spicer, Dana, or Brown Lipe did not use a "T" prefix.

Yup, got it. Any idea on the serial number?

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Thanks again, but that leads me to another question (sorry). Based on the serial number I believe the motor that this is attached to is a an early truck motor. Is it possible that this entire package is right out of an early 4WD Willy’s truck? A guy on the oldwillys forum states that his early truck is literally a CJ2a with wider axles and a different body. Edit; the T84 transmission would probably shoot at least part of that idea down.Michael O. wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2018 8:07 pmJeff, that looks like a second style CJ case with the 1 1/8 “ hole for the intermediate shaft? Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Did any of the post war Willys trucks use a T-84 type transmission?

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
To the best of my knowledge after the CJ2 (not the CJ2A) no Jeep models used the T84. I think all CJ2A’s used the T90, some (many?) of which were column shifted.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
Hello,
I have another one:
C-18-15-10-1
J27-4 (would this be 27th of Sep 1944? This would mean that they started mentioning the casting year already in 1944 and not 1945 like Chuck presumed in his first post).
J 316990
I can make more pictures.
Greetings
Hans

This is a very good description.Sean Collins wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2017 8:56 amYes. The T-90 idler shafts are spaced farther apart than T-84, so the clearance recesses had to be machined larger, see the photo chronology below.wc56daveyboy wrote:So, my question is, after trying to understand all the posts here, did this transfer case have to be reworked to accept the T90?
Yours has also been machined for the larger intermediate shaft (1 1/8" or 1 1/4", I can't tell from the photo), so it will have civilian gearing.
Since it is a Ford casting (only made during WW-II?), it's more evidence that Dana-Spicer were buying surplus cases and putting them to use post-war.
Click photos to enlarge:
Original MB cases:
1st generation for T-90 (same as late MB w/additional machining for T-90)
2nd generation for T-90 - larger intermediate shaft and accommodates oil circulation.
3rd generation for T-90 - NO LONGER supports T-84

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
I'm trying to date some transfercases and point out some more anomalies. I'll break it down to one transfercase per posting.
This is a Ford case with no Brown-Lipe tag and no holes indicating that there ever was one. That's one question right there, as a ford case up thread has a tag. I don't know how to date this case, please help. Notice the nub with the yellow crayon highlighting it. That will come up in two later posts. On this Ford case it almost looks like rivet head, but I think it's part of the casting. On the other two downthread, it is part of the casting.

Re: Dana T18 TRANSFER CASE TIMELINE
This is J 264721. Notice the yellow nub is clearly cast into the case. Why? I have two more downthread that do not have this feature.
I found the date tag after some disassembly; April 29, 1944.
