Sean Elliott's GPW & MB Speedos and Gauges Pages Back Again.

Post by Jon » Sun Oct 05, 2014 12:08 am

When Sean went to Melbourne many years ago now, his web page sort of evaporated into the bottomless pit of the and nether regions of the World Wide Web.

I did have a link on JeepDraw parts Colours Page, but it let nowhere to his MB & GPW gauges and another link on Speedos.

I managed to capture some on the WayBack Machine, mostly the words, but not the photos.
So, over the past week I've been sticking it back together as best I could a considerable amount of time and effort went into trying to get it back the way it was.

Please check it out http://www.jeepdraw.com/correctgauges.html

And. ..... Feedback .. would be appreciated. Oh....and......I need a few photos of the very early Stewart-Warner Speedos.

Great work JR! Here I was thinking when I read it that he was back in business doing gauges and it would make some people very happy!

I'll have a dig on the puter for the SW speedo pics I have from my 42 and get to you what I can, but others please feel free to send pics also as I don't know when I will be able to find the ones I have or if they'll be good enough.

Cheers
Ian.

Thanks Ian,
Photos I'm particularly looking for is the earliest Stewart-Warner Speedo, No. 400096 , the one with the white background and black numbers in the Odometer and Trip meter.

In case you're wondering , this is what I went by.. For Ford

And this one for Willys.....

Good effort Jon, thanks.

I've just emailed you a copy of Sean's original website. I'm sure I could find some better pictures though - will have a look.

The autolite temp gauge you show in the new site is one of those greek refurbished ones with a thinner gauge wire used on the wrap. Here are some nice pics of a NOS gauge on ebay a while back.

The SW temp gauge also appears to be the later production one with the smaller font "Temp". I attach the best pics I have of the original larger font.

Cheers,

Dave

Jon....here are another couple pics af an Autolite Oil Pressure Gauge:

This is for the SLAT GRILL MBs...the gauge is the same but the two studs on the rear of the case are BIGGER and the corresponding mounting bracket has larger holes in it to accomodate those larger studs:

Looking good Jon. I'm going to throw a spanner in the works as I believe there were actually 2 variants of long needle SW speedo in 1942 after the early white lettered variety (which was new to me).

I have 2 examples of the long needle 403261.

The one coded 590AD K4 has 4 equally spaced ribs on the rear of the case
The one coded 590AD K7 has 5 ribs - an extra rib is inserted close to the trip switch. I think the body may be slightly longer too but that may just be my memory. One is being restored right now so I can't compare.

Your page shows the earlier 4 rib model. Here are some pics...

What I find strange is that the later 5 rib case seems to match the case of the early white odometer model pictured?

Cheers,

Dave
