This thread is great regarding the how to and size and types of rivets. Is there any kind of frame diagram that shows exactly what type and size of rivets that went in each hole in the frame? I keep seeing the frame takes 5/16" and 3/8" hot rivets and Huck rivets, however, I haven't seen anything that shows exact locations.

Hello, No sorry, don't have a diagram of rivet hole sizes, but I think you will find that some 5/16 holes will be damaged. We
drilled them out oversize (with inner rails bolted in) and used 3/8. Also when hot riveting, its ok to have the holes a bit larger
then the rivet to be used since the heat will expand the rivet a bit. Once the rivet is in, it will fill out excess space.

I recommend you buy 5/16 and 3/8 rivets and apply them as needed in accordance with your frame holes.

Structurally, would 3/8 bolts work just as good as rivets?

NO. The heated rivet will expand into any voids or uneven space, when worked into the hole
and be much stronger. When it cools down, it with retract a little, pulling the joint even more
together.

Hi Hinrik...

Well, I finally got my a$$ in gear after a load of life's little hassles and distractions. I can't believe it's nearly a year since I last picked this up, but hey, I finally got the tool made. Now I just need to make the various die parts to actually press the rivets.

If I may ask a question, can you please give a rough guide on the sequence you use to rivet the frame together. I'm wondering how you go about making sure there is good paint inside the rails after welding in the mid X member and spring/shock mounts??

Nigel,

Nice looking tool you made. We epoxy primed the frames before riveting together, but you need to do welds afterwards, so more primer
has to be used after riveting job is done. The shock mounts I painted on inside with POR-15 anti rust paint.

We did one frame where it was totally stripped apart. First the bigger outer and inner rails were riveted together and then the cross members
added to the main sections. But expect that you might have to "tweek" the frame afterwards to get it straight. I had to do that.

Also try to get newly made set of front gusset plates. A mix of original, NOS, MD Juan is not a good idea as the front bumper mounting holes will
not align up. Please post photos of your riveting job later.

Hi Hinrik,

I assume the Brake cylinder bracket, body brackets and gearbox crossmember mount brackets need to be fitted first?

Two question:

1) how do you buck the rivets for the spring brackets on a gpw. I see your custom bucking bar setup but there are no hole in the inner channel to stick in a bucking bar.

2) I have a frame that is slightly banana shaped but I haven't put in the inner frame channels. It bows out in the middle and comes back in at the front and rear of the frame on both sides. If I built a jig table like is pictured toward the beginning of this post, clamped everything straight and riveted, would the frame remain straight? The inner channels are straight as arrows but came from another frame.

Old Pal,

To rivet on the spring hangers, you need to remove the round threaded tube which is welded into the bracket. Often the threads in these are
damaged anyways. I did find some newly made repro from Wildeberg Holland and once riveting was done, we welded in the new tubes.

As for the bent outer rails, you really need to straighten them before riveting. We did a lot of this before riveting our frames and even afterwards
some tweaking was required.

What about the rear brackets for the front springs? There doesn't seem to be access for a bucking bar.

Old Pal,

In those 2 location you need to use 3/8 BOM rivets.
