Found this at the local flea market for $10. It's US made, marked "Monarch" underneath the carrying ribs. Also, "US", "G", "43", and "ICC 5L". The sides of the can are marked "G" for gas, and "QMC". There are no markings on the bottom of the can. The can looks like a standard 5-gallon gas can, but the lid is European or German style hinged, with "McCord" stamped across it. Is this an original USGI can, in a different configuration, or is this an aftermarket modification or copy? Inside is not lined, and it's definitely for gas, not water.
I don't really need it, so taking it with me to Aberdeen in a few days to find a new home.

Yeah, it's the first one I've seen like this one. Thanks for the info.
Should I assume the year of mfr. is 1943? Also, what does "ICC 5L" denote?

This type of gasoline can was made by Monarch in 1942-43 for trials to determine if it was an improvement over the standard US can.
The superior sealing capability of the German cam-lock lid was being evaluated.
This can was made with the German cam-lock feature, but able to accept a US "donkeydick" pouring spout.
They were found satisfactory, and approved for production, but....
At the time, the pre-invasion (of Europe) supply of jerrycans on the US continent, and England seemed to be enough that the Quartermaster Corps saw no need to implement this improvement (US production of cans was being curtailed).
The rapid 1944 advance on the European continent soon depleted the inventory of available cans, and a hurried resumption of jerrycan production in the USA did not practicably allow time to retool a new style of lid.
After the war this type of can was apparently forgotten about when jerrycan production resumed to fulfill the needs of the Korean war.

1943 is the year of manufacture and ICC5L, Interstate Commerce Commission Regulations concerning construction of five gallon gasoline containers.maddawg308 wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 2:38 pmYeah, it's the first one I've seen like this one. Thanks for the info.
