Color of RT 524

Post by Gary Turman » Thu May 17, 2018 2:03 pm

Can someone tell me the correct color a 524 would have been. I'm repainting mine and it looked kike semi gloss, (24087) but after painting just the top it didn't look like the rest of the radio

Came in two colours...you can think of it as Early and Late. 60s-80s were pretty much all 24087 semi gloss. Late production and some rebuilds were 34094 CARC Flat Green.

Unfortunately that's not going to be very helpful as there are shade differences between the different suppliers out there. This question has come up before. If you want to try some different things to find the closest match - some have had the best luck with Aervoe 997B. Others chose FS 24084 rather than the FS 24087. As much as I love Gillespie's paint over Aervoe's and use probably 40 gallons a year...their FS 24087 doesn't match VN era radios or vehicles at all, in my own experience. It is way off. But individual mileage varies greatly in The Great Paint Debate.

For repainting radios and commo equipment I've found that Aervoe 997A matches the original color and gloss of most Viet Nam era pieces. The Gillespie 24087 is too brown and too flat, the Aervoe is the closest off the shelf that I've found. For a later look the Gillespie 34094 works well
