Correct vibrator for a DY-88
Another question. What is the correct 6 volt vibrator for the DY-88? Mine has 6 pins and there are 7 socket holes.
I also need some new cable to repair the CD-1086 power cable that links the DY-88 to the GRC9 and BC1306, where can one by it.

Hello Adrian,
The correct one is the 7 pins. Have a look at the bottom of that page :

Here is the DY-88 part of the schematic containing the vibrator E-201. Yves

BTW, have a look at that nice explanation from Robert WA5CAB about that vibrator.

As he mentioned at the bottom of his post, certain vibrators have pin 3 or 4 missing.

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
TM-11-263 show the internals of that vibrator (E-201)
It looks like pin 3 of the E-201 vibrator is unconnected in series-drive vibrators So the DY-88 can work with a 6 pins series-drive vibrator.
Pin 3 is used with shunt-drive vibrators as mentioned in the TM: I don't know the shunt drive vibrator type number.

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
Hello Yves
That information is brilliant. I do not have the manuals yet as they are hard to get in booklet form. I am going to have to work out the correct orientation, in the DY-88, of the vibrator because I think it may be 1 pin out. Unfortunately there is no indexing tag for these vibrators and you have to study the holes in the socket to see which ones have had the large pins of the vibrator in them. If the vibrator has been fitted incorrectly in the past, there could be more than 2 enlarged holes.
I have bought some new cable and tonight I am going to repair my CD-1086 power lead.
I will post what happens.

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
Yes I've also experienced the vibrator orientation problem.
The same problem exists with the PP-114/VRC3 power supply.
I couldn't find the original large holes because others holes had been enlarged by forcing the vibrator incorrectly.
I've decided to write the pin numbers on the socket and on the vibrator.
A good scanned copy of the TM-11-263 manual (1956 version) can be downloaded fro the Radionerds.
http://www.radionerds.com/index.php/AN~GRC-9
The DY-88 is described, starting from page 139.
On the DY-88 schematic, page 144, they show the shunt-drive vibrator model with pin 4 not connected.
You just have to pinpoint pin 7 connected to the ground in the vibrator socket using a multimeter.

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
I have made a new power cable tonight and fired both the GRC9 and the BC1306 up. I can get lots of people, stations and morse on the GRC9 but only managed one radio station low down on the BC1306, I think the BC3106 needs an overhaul but I will leave it on all day tomorrow to warm it up.
The dynamotor spins up on both when the sets are switched to transmit mode.
Here are the new and old leads In the next two pictures you can see how the power lead individual cores have completely broken down. I suspect the rubber was made from milk solids or chocolate solids. This is the new lead. It is smaller in diameter but the cores are of the same cross sectional area. The old lead was 8 cores of .75mm square wire, made up of 16 individual strands at .25mm diameter and the new wire is 8 core at about 24 strands at .2mm diameter. It is slightly smaller overall in diameter because the insulation on each core wire, and the outer insulation, is of thinner plastic. Adrian

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
Yves,I have had a good look at the socket for the vibrator and the socket holes are numbered on the bakerlite. The numbers are hard to see.

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
You are lucky .
In the PP-114 vibrator power supply, there is no marking on the socket .
So you have just to pinpoint pin 3-7 or pin 4-7 on your vibrator with a multimeter and align the pins with the socket marking. Yves

Re: Correct vibrator for a DY-88
There's a great article on converting the DY-88 to a solid state vibrator, by N6CAV. I have it mentioned in my article on the converting the vibrator in my SCR-284.
A link to the DY-88 article is in the second paragraph here- http://m37.crwdesigns.com/vs-3-vibrator-conversion/
