LIVING HISTORY

Post by Joe Gopan » Fri Apr 27, 2018 5:36 pm

One of my fondest memories is hearing a gentleman who was a member of general Custers unit who did not go out on the day Custer's unit was massacred. He was the Bugler and was 14 or 15 at the time. I used to listen to Art Linkletters "House Party" after school and this old veteran was on the show. He was in his 90's when he appeared on the show.

Wow! What a great story.

How long ago was that? Art linkletter show was what, in the 60's sometime?

My home town of Spencer Massachusetts has a soldier interned there that was killed at that battle. Now I doubt his entire body was transported to mass for burial. I doubt that was possible in the day even if he wasnt hacked up

I'll get his name and post later. I have a picture of the stone too somewhere. I'll try to post.

What's interesting, when going to this site at one time a few years ago was the amount of pebbles left on the top of the stone.
from what I read the Native American did this practice to honor or remember the dead, much like when we leave flowers, or the asians leave rice on a grave.

After the battle with Custer the stone age savage Sioux and Cheyenne women butchered the bodies of the dead and wounded soldiers like they butchered buffalo. Body parts were spread across the battle field as well as internal organs and without heads the bodies could not be identified nor what parts came from what body.Today everyone feels sorry for the savages who refused to enter either the 18th or 19th century and preferred living as stone age savages.

Art Linkletter's House Party, it was on during afternoons when I got home from school. Am guessing that it was during 1951 or 1952, and the soldier was the unit buglar who stayed behind for some reason.

From what I remember, the Bugler was 14 at the time.
