What is this USMC Bag?

Post by Wingnutt » Sun May 20, 2018 5:50 pm

I left this behind at the flea market today. The exterior is vinylized, like a poncho. Straps and supporting straps underneath are canvas. It's lined or padded with something thick but malleable, almost fluid, like some modern "cooler-like" lunchbags. It has a piece of wood fitted at the very bottom to help it keep its shape and provide a flat hard surface for whatever was kept inside to rest on. Does anyone recognize it? What is it? What was its purpose? And what era is it from?

That's an insulated cover/container for a 5 gallon water can. Usually used to keep hot liquids (coffee or soup etc) hot or cold liquids cold. Also used in winter conditions to keep water in cans from freezing. The ones that I have seen are Korean War (50s) dated.
