that is exactly what it is .. it is the right way .. it is fired from a cup type launcher.. and it is fired fins first.. then tumbles around straight.. but I cannot find my book right now to tell you what the model # of it is

Yep, these are early war. One I had a while back had yellow painted fins (yellow flare color?) and stenciling dated 1941. Pretty scarce compared to the common wartime series.

It's a signal flare for the M1, M3 & M4 series signal projector... I have one of the projectors in my M8 Armored car. The projector is about the saem size as current star cluster and parachute flare tubes (12" long)

These flares come in star parachute, star cluster, white, green & amber colors and are M17,18,19,20,21,22 & 27
