MG mount. What is the correct timeline?
]Hello,
I have looked at other threads and have a good idea of what I may need. I am looking for confirmation and/or suggestions.
I have a 3/42 GPW. I am planning to buy a semiauto 1919. At this point, I am trying to determine what MG mount would be correct for a Jeep in service just after mine was built.
I know of a few MG mounts that were used during the war, M31, M31c and M48.
This is what I think I know so far:
M48 was a dash mount. Used during the entire war.
M31 was Pedestal Mount with NO legs and is set to take the 1919 (D38579) pintle mount.
M31C was Pedestal Mount with WITH legs and is set to take both 1919 and .50 pintle mount. (unknown when this was introduced)
I don't want to mount my gun on the dash so I am left with the M31 or M31C.
I would rather have the suport legs of the C version, but I dont know if it was in service in mid 1942.
Does anyone know when the C version was introduced? Also, if anyone has anyother sugestions or conflicting info please let me know.
Thanks,
Brett

Don’t quote me on this but I think the M31 was for .30 and .50, the addition of the legs didn’t change the designation to M31C, I believe that was the addition of the later cradle. Hasn’t Jeep draw got a section on mounts?
Ford GPW 6008, in slow process of restoration.

Having mucked about with mounting pedestals on jeeps, you're probably going to want the legs. There is a reason they were added. The first pedestal was causing the floor to flex. Adding the legs just made the jeep rock on it's springs, even with the 50 up there.
The down side is it takes up a LOT of room, and you run into the pedestal frequently.

Thanks for the info guys.
I did not even think of checking JeepDraw.
I figured the mount would take a lot of room. I under stand that the legs really make it tight for the poor guy in the back.
This mount will be used for a semiautomatic 1919 that I will shoot from the jeep from time to time. I will never use a .50 cal. With that said, I still want a good solid mount that will not flex the floor and MG mount on the frame.

If you want to ensure it’s a solid mount, use the legs.
You don’t want a dash mount, but what about the cavalry step mount that goes on the Little step on the passenger side outside the cab?

The step mount might work. I was under the impression that they were field made?

If you need a brand new reproduction AMERICAN-MADE D38579 yoke, send me a PM.
I bought it thinking I was going to use it with my Show of Force display gun (M2HB) on my M38A1. However, I changed my mind and got a M23 cradle to mount the gun instead.
An American-made D38579 will not crack under actual use like those cheaper reproductions made in India and China will do.
