WW2 US Weapons/Ordance Paint Color

Post by dantheman » Fri May 04, 2018 5:56 am

I know the paint color debate is like beating a dead horse but I would like some opinions. I am about to restore/re-restore some of my weapons and ordnance pieces and am trying to decide a paint color. I'm working on a US M2 60mm mortar, M1A1 bazooka, M49A2 60mm rounds, M6A1/3 2.36" rockets (M7 repaints), rifle grenades, hand grenades, etc. I know that original color varied some but I am looking for a good, all purpose paint color. I painted my 45 GPW OD 319 and, while I like the color, I don't think it's quite the right color for this. I'm thinking OD 33070. I'm about to order a gallon, would love to hear some opinions.

Here's a description of the paint used for shells, bombs, grenades, , and other ammunition components. ENAMEL, lusterless, quick drying, olive-drab. It should be applied over a primer as it is very porous.

Well that could be almost any shade of lusterless OD... I agree with the primer but from what I have seen in stripping original parts primer wasn’t used. OD applies directly to the part. I think I’m going to go with OD 33070

I got it from TM9-2851 PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIELD USE December 1947. There are other more specific manuals but this was all I had handy.

TM9 shade #8 is what I use on my ordnance restorations. I have a full thread on this forum showing the color.

Ah I was wondering what it was you used, Quest. Your stuff looks great, I’ll have to look into the #8. I have spray cans of 319, 33070, and others, I think I may try ordering a can of the #8 and see how it compares to the GCI 319. Do you use primer in your restorations? If so what type? Thanks for the input everyone.
