Water Trailer Camouflage?

Post by Dave A. » Tue Mar 13, 2018 1:33 am

Seen a lot of WWII water trailers including restored and in vintage photos. I have read that some of the water and fuel trailers were camouflaged with tarps and bows to prevent them being identified by aircraft as they were considered a higher value target. Does anyone have a photo of a WWII water trailer that was camouflaged with bows and a tarp?

Thank you.

I used to own a 1945 dated water trailer that had bow pockets down both sides. I don't have any pictures of it though.

I had a WW2 GI snap shot photo of an ETO water trailer tucked in the bed of a 1.5T Chevy... that was towing another water trailer. Pic was taken in England, most likely in prep for France. I recall that the bows were on the hauled trailer. I'll see if I still have copies of the pic.

Hey Farrell, those stake pocket for your trailer would be quite easy to reproduce. Has anyone approached you about making some up or at least making a mechanical drawing of them? I know that Cody wanted to build the "cargo disguise" for his G-527 sometime.

Wow...had not seen the bow corners for the water trailer. Thank you for sending them.

Here's a couple of thoughts:

- The stake pockets seem to get in the way of the reflectors in the rear.

- I noticed that on my Sept, 1941 water trailer there are no extra holes. However, on the 1944 trailer there are holes that seem to match up to the stake pockets. Seems that perhaps at some point, between 1941 to 1944 these extra holes were made for the possibility of putting these brackets on.

- Am tempted to make a convenient way to put the stake pockets without ruining metal or drilling any new holes. Won't look like what is in the pictures but easy to make and of course, just a temporary way to do it without it being historically accurate.

Hey Farrell, I have been working on the Gates for my trailer and know how the bows connect to the vertical stanchions. I was wondering how they connect to vert. stan's for the G-527. Do you know?

BY THE WAY, how did you get so lucky to find a G-527 with ALL of those unit I.D. markings on it........ What a find, wheeeew!! :)
