3" cannon
Couple of notes of interest and concern.
Used primarily for training of troops prior to WWI, it was not deployed to Europe, as the French 75 was a better piece in both range and recoil design.
Would have had a shield fitted between the wheels with 4 shell containers underneath.
Would be towed by 6 horse team, using a "limber" which has the ammunition for firing the gun, a hitch to hook the gun to and most important, a limber pole to hitch the horses too.
Opening up a cannon made after 1898 that was considered a "DEWAT" by welding shut of such is unfortunately illegal under BATF rules for destructive devices. Hate to say it, but they can walk in and make you cut a nice BIG hole in the breech area ('3 wide) weld in a rod to block the barrel, and make you or your organization pay for the work at a shop THEY pick (maybe even out of state) to do the work....Oh, the fine is 10K and 10 years in jail too, so I would really make sure the local Museum has it on their books if you want to further pursue restoration.
Many books out there, but purchasing a photo copy of the manual from Military info (paladin press)
