FWD Starter Motor help, Delco Remy

Post by Bodger Baz » Mon Apr 16, 2018 8:43 am

Hi all

Looking for some help locating a replacement starter motor for an FWD SU-COE. the one we have is completely shot!

FWD part number 11A-1108406
Delco Remy, 1108406 1B3
10 teeth
12 volts

The engine is a Waukesha SRKR so it may be fitted in other vehicles?

Any help will be great

Hi Barry
Is the truck you are working on a USMC FWD?

If it were me...
I would list what is salavagable:
Bendix teeth ok?
Bendix spring ok?
Housing ok or cracked (can be welded)?
End caps ok?
Bearings in end cap worn out (simple replacement)
Armature ok or is commutator area ate up (can be turned on lathe and dressed) windings shorted (can be soldered)

Then everyone knows what the definition of "Shot" is.
Next see what the TM says about the starter, (maybe post that) then what a "Motors Manual" says about that size Waukesha Engine, which would allow me to check other Wauk engines for a possible compatible Delco starter. Now knowing that Waukesha engines were and are in all sorts of things from CA-1 bulldozers to the tracked artillery haulers, and voltage doesn't matter (depending on what "Shot" is) you may come across a unit that can fit using your original starter mounting nose (assuming it's not "Shot") and just rework the body with either new Delco windings (If yours are not "Shot" you can use the old housing and windings) or just the armature perhaps.
Bottom line mixing and matching parts from other Wauk/Delco applications will be the best option unless someone just happens to have that part number laying out there.

Now I can ask if there are any generator or starter rebuild companies around England...(the 2nd best option for keeping it original if there is no replacement in internet reach) This should be 30-40 minutes of work for them if they have the parts on hand.

Once some of the above are known, I would then resort to ordering parts off e-bay or a tractor parts company for a similar application starter and grafting them in, (Delcos are in everything) then have the local company assemble and test it for you if they are anywhere near you.

About the only thing a person can't do easily on rebuilding a starter or generator in their garage are removal of the coils (takes a press with screwdriver bit inserted in hole to torque it out), rewinding the armature or coils themselves (neatness and clearance is hard to obtain) or cleaning the armature to ensure the mica is undercut properly, but this can be done carefully with some hand tools.

10 teeth sounds like maybe a Ford Model-A bendix from memory, but that was years ago trying to find an easy bendix for the GPW, the Clark Air, CA-1 dozer was a little harder to build a starter out of three versions.
If you posted year and motor size/type....I might be able to look up the Motors Manual reference tonight and offer more info from those old books.
Photos might help others ID the bendix or nose to offer up other possible starters they have used.

Here's starter coils for example...seems Farmall used the Delco as well, have to read the cross over tables, it's listed as 6VCCW but fits 12V CW....
1108406 Delco, Starter, 12V, CW, New

Possibly your starter brush set here:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Starter-Brush- ... -1&vxp=mtr

Or the end brush plate with 4 brushes (fits according to bottom cross reference data)

Ten tooth bendix might match yours, but without photo or measurements....

Would need more info to cross ref your armature, here's a typical listing of one for a Farmall tractor:

CE OD: 0.563in / 14.3mm

That FWD truck is not listed in Ordnance interchanges, nor does it's Waukesha type show up in any Ordnance responsibility vehicles. The Lists in the Ordnance manuals have no match for DELCO 1108406 Starter. Apparently it was not supported as were the US Army WWII Military Standard trucks.

They weren't Joel
The USMC FWD was tested by the Army and condemned as unsafe .so the Marine Corps took them lol
The FWD as pictured in England was a either lend lease or direct foreign contract
I don't believe the Army ever had them in the inventory for other than testing.

I'm at an end of my search, if one of the above solutions don't work, you may try retail Waukesha starter purchase here:
http://www.psep.biz/store/waukesha_starter_motors.htm

Basics raw data goes a lot further than speculation in these searches.

Thanks for all your help everybody, very much appreciated.

The vehicles were built specifically for British use under lend lease. they used the same artillery rear body as fitted to the AEC Matador.

The motor has a reduction gearbox on it, the gears have stripped several teeth and then smashed the end plate of the motor housing and the gearbox housing! the armature is fine but the gear on the end has lost several teeth, the clutch is fine. i have tried a few other starter but so for not found anything that can be used or any other starter with a reduction gearbox .

if the search comes a dead end we will make a new stater motor to fit.

Cheers

So from your parts diagram, is it the part number 1857818? Sometimes referred to as a bendix?

parts that are damaged

817063 gear housing
817070 reduction gear
818134 (gear damaged on the end of the armature)

the bendix is damaged but is salvageable
as is the drive housing

Am sure a professional Authorized Delco repair station over here can do the repair. There are plenty of them around the USA.

I have called contacted several dealers and so far no joy, seems it’s a very unusual starter with the reduction.
