Tool Compartment Tool Box
One of the niftier features of trucks like the CCKW is the tool compartment in the rear under the cargo bed. However, while it is fairly good sized, organizing and accessing tools through that flip up door can be a challenge.
After trying various bags and rolls, I have settled on this method which utilizes metal tool boxes - of the kind that are usually purchased with large socket sets. They typically become available when the owner incorporates their new tools into his or her primary tool box, thus abandoning the box that came with the set. You can often find these reasonably priced at garage sales, flea markets, or online.
The latest one I found came from a second hand shop. It is a Snap-On KRA-280. It was missing its original handle, and someone had removed one of the internal dividers - which was actually perfect for me, as I did not need those things anyway. Since i was so sad looking, I got it for $20.
This particular model lacked the handles on the side - which are handy for pulling it out of the tool compartment. I got a set from McMaster Carr. I did not have access to a welder at this time, so I silver brazed them in place. (In retrospect, I should have riveted them, as I picked up a little bit of warpage from the brazing.)
The "custom" handle that someone had bolted to the top was then removed. The holes were filled with JB weld and sanded smooth.
Next came some metal finishing, followed by primer and paint. Lastly, in an effort to make it look a little more military-like, came a little custom work in the form of some stenciling. For this, I used a magnetic stencil material, tracing the letters and cutting them out with an exacto knife. I have used this stuff before, and if you are careful, you can get pretty good results.
Now, I know those stencils will not fool anyone (especially on this site) into thinking that this is genuine GI equipment. (Ditto for the post '70s Snap-On logo. ) However, it does add a little bit of pizzazz that's appreciated by some of the non-HMV enthusiasts.
In any case, tools are now organized, and easily accessible when needed.
Best Regards...

Hi VJ,
I'm in the Macomb Twp. area.
I'm maybe 40 minutes or so NE of Westland. Usually drive right by there whenever I go to the airport.

Re: Tool Compartment Tool Box
The LONG hand crank for the Jimmy W/Winch is to be stowed under the seat, as per the T.M., which is what NEWC had inquired about. Not the standard non-winch truck.

Re: Tool Compartment Tool Box
It's in the Tool Section of the CCKW TM's.
One Example:
TM9-801, April, 1943, Page 73, Paragraph 33a., Starting Crank and Crank Bracket.
