I'll put that photo up on that RAEME Board and see if we can identify the "Unknown" 2.

These are an overwidth vehicle for Australian roads [2.5m or 96"max] & that is most likely a clearance light, just wrong angle in the photo?

No - those guarded lamps seem to be on all of the trucks - would it be as silly as warning for the door being open at night! Leaving door open for operating at a recovery...

Not all trucks had those lamps on the top of the actual mirror head No. 11, though it could have been done initially and replacement mirrors were just civi ones without them.

I'd like to do the ones with the guards as that is an obvious fab job. Wiring (purpose) could come later when we have an answer.
As far as overwidth - how different to tractor trailers (artics) are they!?? Would have thought they'd been considered the same until towing something huge.

One must understand that to this day Australian road regulations have kept anything over 96" off the roads except special purpose registered 'overwidth' vehicles like cranes etc.
At the end of their life you will probably find the M816 were placarded 'OVERWIDTH' or 'OVERSIZE'. I am not positive & recce mechs of the era may.

Excluded from exemption are all 102" vehicles like prime movers, tractor trailers, buses & RV's of that dimension

The Australian Defence Department has always tried to comply with a 2.5m or 96" requirement AND that means & meant that most US military type heavy vehicles other than recovery & tank transporters etc. were not considered in ADF Materiels Branch evaluation & purchase.

Nicely presented/restored example located in Perth.

NB. Fruehauf tandem axle tilt bed trailer was standard issue with most units. Often carried Ser III Land Rover for distant recoveries/postings and used on location rather than "zooming" around in 816. Co-driver would drive it if casualty was to be trailered.

Non standard extras (beyond RAEME initial conversion) on this one - second jump (slave) socket on cab side (several have this), second spare tyre bracket (rear of passenger side body - no tyre this pic), locker and added water Jerry cans (might have been regular CES for a particular unit).

I know of one M816 that even used the stake pockets along the body sides for 'hungry' (greedy) boards for containment of extra supplies when going "out in the bush" and was also fitted with over cab mesh bin. See second pic.
The hole in the bonnet side was used for the heater intake on the US wreckers. Most RAEME ones had this removed and the hole blanked out., or the whole side panel remade, as in this one that had to be remade to accommodate the bonnet raise for a Jake brake install. Note gap over headlamp.

Note: Level wind and tensioner missing from front winch. 21 Construction Wksp "Chook" n spanner on door. Don't think this one ever saw civilian hands. It's at the Bandiana museum.

Thanks John. I had already down loaded the 21 Constn Sqn files... though any of them are gonna be flippin complicated to recreate on my doors (by hand)!!!

The "Request a badge.." form, would that be a way for me to get some recreated? I'd like to do them right! However the emblem of the full time unit back in the 70's n 80's as in the pic above was different than the current TA unit as seen on the web site.
Might be a good winter project for hand painting in the "hobby room" of the house along with the TAC plates (crossed swords/crown/roo)...

Howard

not sure I got the colours quite right... copied from MVCA site (not been working for quite a while now)

NB. TAC plate missing but lo-viz "?9" stencilled instead, also has "Christmas tree" marking on door and the yellow/black warning stripes on the stabiliser pads have been painted over. Added CES stowed all over boom and rear bed etc. [cam net, supports, bed cover, tentage.. maybe?]

Christmas tree explanation from REMLR..

Use of the 'Kangaroo' normally reserved for overseas deployment and used as nation identifier (Australia), a-la star USA, or a country's national flag for countries that don't have a unique symbol.

Looks like it is "AMF" under the 'roo rather than ARMY...

Next modification to be tackled is the moving of the passenger side welding bottle to join the one on the drivers side.

If its any help,

From jon Rogers photo, the vehicle closest to the camera, guys head is in the cab (#02426 number plate, which is actually missing a 1 due to the angle of the photo and should read 102-426) is:
Chassis: 10577
Engine: 100185
Engine changed to: 77768 possibly in 1982.

Was sold in 1986.

I cant quite make out the number plate on the other one?

Cheers,
Ian.
