THE KOREAN WAR YEARS

Post by Joe Gopan » Wed Oct 05, 2011 4:53 am

There was a lot of interesting freight awaighting movement at the Maine Central Freight Yard in Bangor. It was common to see flatcar loads of yellow CCKW's, Fuel Trailers, and other misc military trucks that were likely headed North to Presque Isle or Limestone (Loring) Air Force Bases in Maine. The Maine Central still used Steam Locomotives, it was exciting to watch a "double header" assisted by a "pusher" at the rear starting off with intermittant spinning of the wheels. There would be huge gouges left in the tracks from the spinning drivers on the steam locomotives.

Lots of transient Aircraft going thru Dow during the period, Flights of black B-26 Invaders, C-46's and C-82's headed to France, most likely Indo China. The occasional B-36 would rumble overhead. We bought a Conveyor Loader used for coal, there were a few Yellow CCKW Airfield tankers at the salvage yard, the hoods and doors were sealed with the USAF version of Duct tape, it came in a Kelly Green and a Red Color. I used to see the red tape on the machine guns on the F-80's. Our automobile sales an business at our burger joint was brisk.
A few of the civilian female clerical help at Dow were good customers. On young lady was named Topsy Forney. She was from Hancock Point, a small fishing village about 60 miles away. During the latter part of WWII, her mother, Mary, spotted two German Spies who had been dropped off by German U-Boat. They stuck out like a sore thumb, due to being dressed in suits which was not the normal way the locals dressed. The German Agents were caught.

Something rarely, if at all encountered today, but a common sight found in the proximity of Korean era Air Force Bases such as Dow who had Air Defense Command fighter aircraft assigned, was clusters of "chaff" hanging from tree branches. Dow had F-51D's and F-80's assigned this mission. During these years we used to find "chaff" (tin foil) hanging from trees in the forest adjacent to Dow. My guess is that there was a lot of testing of the Dow radar during that time. F-80 and F-51 aircraft from Dow were in the air around the clock.

Thinking about trading a box of Chaff for a CCKW or MB trinket. Chaff is not easy to come by any more.

One of the great pleasures of this hobby is to furnish interesting MV and Warbird accessories to established museums that will give them a good home.
