My SWB CCKW left Denmark 28 years ago this week, it took 10 days for it to land in Newark, NJ via the SS Pulaski. Seems like yesterday and I am still happy to own it. It has 100% GI parts and will always be a "work in progress" as it gets new bits and pieces and tweaks here and there.

Part of the CCKW fun is gathering WWII GI accessories to display with the CCKW, the latest is a NOS WWII era Hand Crank F-2 Gasoline Powered UTILITY HEATER used by the Army Air Force to warm Aircraft Engines and other military equipment. It weighs around 15 Pounds, has a Gas Tank and delivers head by an operator turning a hand crank. Ut is rated at about 40,000 BTU. It will go great being displayed along side the Evans Heater that goes to my CCKW.

I prefer to dress mine up as if it were trucking across Germany during the summer of 45, besides weapon which would have been on it I'm always on the look out for bags and boxes and personal items to help flesh out a piece of history at a specific point in history, show quality is nice but I want some thing I'm not afraid to take out in the bushes for shooting outing with friends and family, I've always driven all my old car projects on a regular basis,if not daily, when I finish my associates in Auto Restoration I knew I would never be happy just doing restorations, living history is much more interesting then static!

Because they are good for what ails you. Once completed they will give you lots of enjoyment, create new friends and good time machine in which to just sit, stare out the windshield, and think of all of the history that the truck has been witness to, or driving across town to park by Hangar #1 at Dow Field to daydream of the days when the ramp outside was full of B-17's and other WWII aircraft headed off to war. Having been at this hobby for longer than most there are a lot of good memories due to daily exposure to WWII vehicles across the street at Dow Field during the 40's thru 50's and every day stories of WWII trucks by veterans while they were young and their experience was still fresh in their mind.

I've been a CCKW fan since the very first time I saw them in use at WWII Dow field. Many of the public libraries in the municipalities surrounding WWII Airfields have filmstrips of the wartime newspapers which will have photos of WWII activity at those bases. Many of these airfields published a weekly newspaper with copies to the libraries which were later put on film. I have spent hours reviewing these films which show glimpses of the WWII MV's, there are photos of CCKW's with snowplows at Dow Field, and many pictures of snowbound P-51's and a brand new B-17 that is up to its wings in fresh snow in front of hanger #1, my present day place to visit. All I have to do is think of an aircraft type seen in the hanger and the memories return as if it were yesterday. Those were the days, Clarktors, Cletracs, Jeeps, 5 Ton 4X4, FWD Snowblowers, and 7 1/2 Ton Tractors were everywhere along with the sound of T-6, C-45, B-25, F-51, early F-80 and F-84 aircraft constantly overhead.

One more 60 year Dow Field tidbit, this coming Spring it will be 60 years ago that I saw one of the last Active Duty USAF B-24s pass thru Dow, it was the Weather Research B-24 passing thru Dow on a sunny fornoon, I thought I heard a couple C-47's and it turned out to be the B-24 on final. This is the B-24 that was on display at Lackland and is now at Duxford, I believe.

The WWII Training Films on the CCKW are a must for those who have never owned or maintained a CCKW. They are available from "Vintage Video". I dig mine out every few years and am able to smell the grease on the coveralls of the GI mechanics in the films. These films bring back memories, especially the sound of an idling CCKW transmission that makes that familiar "Fly in a Bottle Noise".

And there are still some clean ones being offered. They are actually easy to maintain except for being larger and requiring a greater assortment of tools and garage floor equipment.
