WHICH CCKW?

Post by Joe Gopan » Fri May 02, 2008 7:30 am

If you are in the market for a CCKW there are some basic considerations.
The Open Cab is not suitable to all physiques, if you have a pot belly or are over 5'10" and overweight you may not fit, especially if you are arthritic, as you have to climb over the side of the cab to enter and depart. The Closed cab is much easier to enter and depart. The CCKW srering wheel is a challenge for Beerbellies, it is easy to spot a CCKW driver with a gut, as there is usually a black streak on his T-shirt.

Ben,

Have any info on cckw gun trucks with the M45 quad mount in the bed?

Was this mod only done for open cab long wheel base cckw's?

Anyone?

AA Artillery units had Quad 50's on both, there is room.
I have witnessed Quad 50's fireing at drones, a sweet sound. Only pictures I can think of are in "GMC a Universal Trucl" by Jeudy. The actual ones I have seen were on M-135 GMC and M-35 Reo 6X6.

Bill,

Thank you for sharing those pictures of the museum truck. I hope to build something like that after I finish my current project but I'm not sure if I will go the cckw route or not. Probably something newer like an M35 that i can get cheaper than a cckw in similar shape. I sure like cckw's tho.

The M-35 with the 331 CID Gold Comet Gasoline Engine is the ultimate in US Army 2-1/2 Ton 6X6 trucks for quietness, comfort and driveability. They are quite snappy to drive and easily average 6-8 MPG. Problem is that most availible M-35's with gasoline engines are now in disrepair. No earplugs necessary, and to go the extra step and install the floating driver seat puts the icing on the cake.

If I were in the mood for a classic M-Series 6X6 truck, I would retrofit a clean multifuel truck back to gasoline, the guys who have only driven a multifuel do not realize what they have missed. I am saving a NOS Gold Comet just in case.

Gas engine MV's

Post by lacoda56 » Thu May 08, 2008 6:25 pm

Ben,

You're absolutely right about the driveability of the gas M35's. I bought an M45 gasser a few years ago (fire dept. maintained) and even though I've had people tell me to convert to multifuel, it's staying as is! It's really a nice handling truck, and it's one of the few remaining gassers around. I have a multifuel 5 ton and it's somewhat of a dog compared to the OA331. I made a coment about multifuel engines being a poor choice for an engine on another board and was nearly strung up because of it. Just my two cents worth!

I have driven up to 400 miles a day in nice M-35s with the older seats with no fatique. My favorute was the 50's LWB Engineers Shop Van made by Couse Laboratories, it carried a working load of 24,000 lb, and was actually overweight for the G-742 chassis. Most of the time on the road was on the governor in 4th Gear at 42 MPH. It rode like a baby carriage, and had about 20' of straight pipe beyond the muffler causing to constantly blat.

I'm 6 ft 230lbs and had room enough in my open cab Airborne CCKW. I never felt cramped. David

Converting an M35 gas to diesel or back is not that simple.

The M35 gasser has a direct on 5th tranny and a different axle ratio as I recall.

Where is Gopan. He could tell you fer sure.

Quoting Farber

"I am 6ft 1in 280lbs. I fit in my open cab and have had my dogs and girlfriend on my lap as I drive. If there is no room in an open cab, then something is not right."

Photo please. This is unbelieveable. I had a 530B Crash Truck (Reo gasser) on the M-34 chassis with 11.00 X 20 singles in the Airfield Services Section that was expected to be driven 60 MPH it was very comfortable at any speed.

The M- Series Reo Gas and Multifuel all share the same Axle ratio.
