My new G506 with questions
Hello all finally got the new g506 home she is a up truck other than that not sure what she was, cargo, dump etc. Overall shes in good shape a little rust on the doors and here and there. It runs really well however it has been swapped to a gmc 270 but retains what i believe to be the original transmission and transfer case. My main question is I believe the rear end has been swapped and if anyone could let me know what that rear end is I would greatly appreciate it. If anyone knows where a bed near the east coast is for sell id like info on that as well. Thnaks for looking and have a blessed day.

Re: My new G506 with questions
Hi; think I see a pre -war early style light on the rt fender. Early guages and early brush grill. Also exterior gas tank that I've seen on '40 trucks. My '40 also had a 2 position headlight switch rather than a 3 clicker. If it has a PTO that will indicate bed/ winch uses. Otherwise go straight cargo. Actually very clean compared to some 'found' trucks. That 2 speed rear usually is a lower speed gear option. Excellent driver as is... The 'Forest Green' also showed up on a '40 Ford contract truck with the OD on top of the green. Newc

Re: My new G506 with questions
She's a cream-puff of a starter truck , wow!! There are guys at your end of the nation who will be able to help you obtain parts for your ride. I would suggest procuring the proper Tech. Manual, (https://www.portrayalpress.com/ProductD ... e=TM-9-805), to help you put her back together correctly. YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THAT TRUCK . Can you post a photo of your engine? If it is in fact a 270, you'll love that engine too. I have one in my Chevy, she purrs like a kitten. That sure would be nice if the ring and pinion ratio's in both of your axles matched at 6:67 to 1.
Take a look here: http://vehiclesofvictory.com/, browse around you'll find technical data about the truck. Your data plate looks to read 2YP01, production #7151 and date of delivery of 1-18-41. The 2 indicates your truck was built at the Tarrytown plant in New York, the YP code is Cargo less Winch, 01 code is for January 1941. 7151 is the finished unit off the assembly line with serial numbers starting at 1001 in August of each year. So your trucks' serial number should be 6150 off the assembly line at the end of Jan. 1941.
Again, congrats on the nice looking find.................. D.

Thank You all. What would be your first step in restoration? Would you swap back to an original rear end?

Re: My new G506 with questions
I see a Virgina license plate and request for a bed on the east coast. Is that where you and the truck are located? I have posted a message to a closed Facebook group to a guy who is parting out a Chevy telephone truck. He may be able to hook you up with the correct rear axle.

Re: My new G506 with questions
I'm the guy with the telephone truck.
It's a K44 but with the wrong cab. Possibly civilian frame and axles. I haven't investigated that deep yet. The front of the frame and bumper were torched off just forward of the springs. The cab is civilian. I have guys ready to gobble up all the K44/43 specific components. But after that I hadn't decided where to take this. Most likely parting out the entire truck.

Re: My new G506 with questions
Hi Matt (Rustman),
Glad you found the thread I was referring to. There is one glimpse of the rear axle in one of your picts and it sure looks correct. Bantamtrailer asked for your contact info, and now he has it.
<<edited to bring focus back to Bantamtrailer's truck and his need for a rear axle>>

Re: My new G506 with questions
Kirk,
I posted some more pictures on the K44/43 group of the cab including of the data plate that had been on the cab when I first found the truck. I took a careful look today and am confident that the frame was original. But the cab certainly was changed, oh and the frame is cracked. But none of that matters here. This thread isn't about my truck. It's about Bantamtrailer's new toy. So I won't hijack it any further. Except to say that yes I will probably have some G506 parts in the next few months.

Re: My new G506 with questions
Not a problem guys use it all youd like, it appears I may have a difficult time with a rear end swap as I believe they have welded the bottom spring to the housing. Would you swap the rear end and leave the GMC engine? At that point everything would be original minus the engine, drivetrain wise. Also needing a gas pedal if anyone has one and a original mirror. Thank you all

Re: My new G506 with questions
That is a great looking truck... I have a question tho, are there any markings on the front turn signal housings or lenses? I have a G506 that has been converted to a wrecker, and I'm looking to put "period looking" turn signals in where the B/O lights used to reside. Good luck on your parts searches to make your truck more complete.
