Re: GTB Build
Did some work on the exhaust and intake manifolds. Here is the before pictures. I will post the after pics when I am completely finished. When welding cast iron just remember to heat the cast and weld it with nickel. drill a small hole at the beginning and end of all cracks. cut a V grove in the cracks and weld. Do a very small bead and stop. Use a pick hammer to tap the molten nickel into the V groove as it cools. When it cools do another small bead and repeat.

Don't for get post heat and/or packing it in warm sand to help minimize the chance of it cracking next to the weld!

Re: GTB Build
I've never had tremendous success welding cast iron, particularly exhaust manifolds, but I will offer up a couple of tips i have learned...
I think I read this one on the Power Wagon forum, It said to use a die grinder with a carbide burr to V out the cracks instead of a grinder. The reason given was a grinding wheel will impregnate the cast iron with abrasive particles contaminating the weld joint, a carbide cutter will not. I have not tried it but it made sense.
Another is to put it in the over for a while to warm it up, pull it out to weld it and then put it back in. Repeat until finished and slowly turn down the heat over 8 hours or so until cool.
Lastly, wood ash is a tremendous insulation, heat it up with a torch, weld a bit and the bury it in a wheel barrow full of wood stove ash.
Best of luck with it.

Re: GTB Build
Great point. I forgot to mention that I used carbide tip on a die grinder. I used a bucket of sand for the final cooling. I do have a bucket of ash. Which would be better? Thanks again for filling in details.

Re: GTB Build
If you notice the first picture on my last post. I have to replace the bearing and seat for the differential. That was the only piece (other than the seals) that needed replaced. Got lucky. Plus it helps that I have extra differentials from the donor truck.
