Happy/Sad memories from less than 18 months ago. I was there when the Trackscavator with grapple, gabbed the trucks one by one and tore them apart. Not much in this world moves me emotionally, but watching this happen actually cause a physical reaction in my chest and I shed a few tears. It was hard to watch. So guys, these trucks are now gone.

Hi; most of what you require is also Civilian. The later 46-47 doors had the metal edged windows, possibly a War left overs. Many of the other parts match Civilian cabs. Newc

Dave,

I feel your pain brother. When a vehicle has survived WW2 plus the following 70 years it just feels wrong when they are then destroyed. But as we know, we cant save everything and you did what you could by helping other owners keep their trucks going, me included.

Thank you.

G506, thanks for for the kind words. I wish that I could have saved more parts from them but I just don't have the room here at my little house. The trucks were originally stationed at Bainbridge Island Naval Station here in Washington St. which is located in Puget Sound. LOTS OF SALT AIR AND FOG. All of the sheet metal had these upside down "cones of rust" that penetrated more than 1/2 way through the metal. A quick rap on the metal with my knuckles set them free, and they were all about the size of a 1/2 pence coin, which is a little smaller than a U.S. 10 cent piece.
So, "WE" save what we can the best way we know how.

Understanding that these trucks are gone, I ask the following question, in general:

How hard is it to find a rebuildable 5 speed G506 transmission?

Impossible... CCKW had 5 speed, G506 had a 4 speed... CCKW engine and tranny transplant was done sometimes.

Forgive a Ford guy and thanks for the education....CCKW.

I thought “CCKW” & “G506” were the same!

You could tell the difference, even if blindfolded after your first ride. The Chevrolet engine is kinda "wimpy" sounding compared to the healthy bark of the GMC.
