SNL G506, Truck 1.5 Ton 4x4, unit 389946, 1 ea.

Post by pintelhook11over » Mon Dec 13, 2010 7:37 pm

Hello everyone, I haven't seen many G506/G7117 restorations posted lately, so here is my project. Hope you enjoy the photos, I will post pictures as I carry out the repair services. The bed has been sandblasted/primered/painted at an earlier date, so it is just ready to bolt on. I started chassis work on 10-10-10, the truck was built October 1942... so I figured it would be a good time to start "bringing her back" into operational standards the month she was bolted together. Here they are...

Hey Guys, if anyone needs to have a LAAARRRGGE piano or some other over sized furniture moved, I am sure that my buddy pintelhook will be able to rent out the cab dolly he built.

Excellent work.

I've seen this truck in person and it's one of the most original and complete G506s that I've seen. Among the rarities: Lube chart holder, lower engine splash pans, grounding straps all over the place. This vehicle is going to make an awesome restoration.

Yeah, those cabs are made of good old American Steel, probably Bethleham or Kaiser steel! The old Kaiser steel plant (now defunct) is 10 miles from my house, I would have been a sight to see all the activity during the war...I recall hearing that they placed it there to make it more difficult for enemy attacks...oh, here are the latest photo's...

Excellent progress. When you get the chance, could you post info on how the floor is attached to the cab? From what I've seen on mine, it looks like it's bolted together on the front end up by the A pillar, but the back end looks like it's a combination of bolts and welds.

Yes, you are correct in your assumption, I plan on sandblasting the interior and bottom of the cab to expose the "spot welds". It is hard to identify the welds with the rough surface texture, I haven't decided if I am gonna remove the floor board, the floor "spacer/filler" wood is in good shape and the large clutch head screws that are at the lower door jams which hold the floor and fire wall together are very corroded so drilling them out is a must. There is no real cancer in the cab except where those pesky quarter panels always rot and behind the driver seat. It did look like the inner "skin" of the lower rotten cab areas look like they will come out of the cab itself...then the outer cab "skins" can be repaired individually, It may be possible to fabricate the "inner" skins, but they are not symetrical. The inner "mini-panels" are made in a left and right side, they look like they were "stamped out" and spot welded in, but simple to reproduce/repair.

Thanks for looking into that. My recommendation regarding the welds is if you don't have to open them up, then leave them alone. Releasing those will potentially throw your door seams out of alignment. The only reason I'm giving any thought to redoing one side of my cab is because the door is off by almost a 1/2 inch. I'm not certain if that misalignment was from damage at some point or just a bad assembly.

Regarding the front patch repairs, I'm pretty sure that Chevs of the 40s and Jim Carter both sell replacement panels for the inside and outside parts. You might want to check their online catalogs for prices and availability.

Good luck.

Well, here are some more photos in my fight with a common enemy, Good old "Major S. Rust"...Lost service time the past two weekends to holidays and wet weather. I scraped off the old grease from the intermediate driveline to find "O.D. Green" under the cab, I have been finding alot of "Black" Items under the dash and very obscure areas. I think my engine compartment was re-sprayed black, but the underdash items and glove box areas lead me to believe the rolling chassis was a black color and the cab and exterior was painted "O.D." later. The areas that the black paint has been applied to has got to be done during assembly line Mfg., maybe when the parts were "Stamped-out", they were red oxide primed the painted black...but how do you explain black paint drips behind the dash that are dripping "upward"? Sadly, I didn't have my camera when I was sandblasting the dashboard so I didn't document the behind the dash drips, and the first photo shows the red oxide primer and O.D. under a non-rusted portion of the cab.

Excellent shots, great progress.

According to Herman Pfauter, the chassis was painted black at the factory and then the services sprayed them their particular colors (OD / Army, Grey / Navy). He left his chassis black when he did his restoration.

Keep up the good work.

Okay, I'm gonna make all of you weep. I am sorry Jonsey but, the story needs to be told. About 4+ years ago, this truck was on the Vehicles of Victory website with a rolling chassis for $4500.00 or best offer. I watched, over the course of 18 to 20 months, as the price went to $3500.00 o.b.o. and a then a few months later to $2500.00.
I told Cody, (pintelhook) about it, and while he was thinking it over, I called the owner. It turns out that Rex, (the former owner) and I know some of the same people in Santa Barbara. Well, Rex tells me, "I am losing the storage area and if you can come up with $1500.00, you can have the lot". I quickly called Cody and told him the deal. I told him I would loan him the Benjamins so he could obtain said truck(s). He said okay. That was roughly two years ago.
I didn't get to really look at it until we got up to Sta. Barb., and never gave it a 'fine toothed comb over' until a year ago. I was really stunned to find most, if not all, the factory issued parts were still on His truck. I am very thrilled to see the final outcome of the restoration. I know my buddy will do a top notch job.
I know that it is rare to find such a complete, unmolested example still intact today. It will be a beautiful truck when completed. Keep up the good work Jonesy ! 8)

Dang! Wish mine was that far along. I'm having hell just finding someone to help with the brakes on mine. Gonna start on the front brakes as soon as the weather lets up a bit. Finally got the rear done.

Billy, while you have your front end apart, I would suggest replacing your knuckle seals and inner splash seals. You have to remove the spindle to get at the inner splash seals. They are inside the axle housing and prevent gear oil from washing the grease in your knuckles away. The NATIONAL SEAL part number is 353141. They are all neoprene and two will fit in place of one original. I resealed 3 front axles for some friends and found that where one oil seal is needed and works well, and two will fit in the same space and take up the same amount of room, it is better.
Bob @ Vehicles of Victory will have the rest of your hub and knuckle seals which are O.G. and leather. Dave.

Thanks. That sounds like good advice. I have heard of the double seal use, but had forgotten that one. I imagine it will be a month or so before I get started on that. Gonna try and fire it up this week & turn it around so I can get to the front section better. Need to doublecheck antifreese, etc, because I don't think winter has had its fill yet.

On this episode the Interior of the operator compartment was sandblasted and "Primed". Body work supplies have been ordered and are "inbound" to the shop, I am planning on a "Black" basecoat/Guide coat before the Gillespie coatings O.D.(77030 I believe) , I am also going to Use "Lead" body solder in the repair work instead of Bondo.

ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Stay tuned for the next episode...when it will Debut in Black! Then, I will Start the next phaze: Body work. Ughhhh...I'm used to doing "fix-broke" repairs, seals, gaskets, o-rings, engine/trans/axle R+I ect., not sanding, bumping, grinding ect., so this is gonna be "uncharted" territory for me. Has anybody done much "Lead" work? I am open to suggestions and info.
