My data plate serial number is M3 0771 and the serial number from the front bumper is 402552. I see that this is an M3 that was converted to an M16A1. Could you tell me when it was built and if it was modified to carry the Maxson quad 50?

Hi Timmo

Thanks for reporting your data, it really helps the research.
Does it have an M16A1 dataplate or are you thinking it was converted to M16A1 because the USA Registration Number is stamped into the bumper?
Did you find the Manufacturer's Serial Number M30771 stamped on the frame?
That indicates that it was the 771st M3 produced by DT, & it would have been accepted in Nov. 1941.
It's a fairly early one, & I'm pretty sure it would have been built with a roller & fender mounted head lamps.

FWIW, this is a case where you can derive the Ordnance Serial Number by adding the MFR's SN to a key number - 1903.
So 771 + 1903 gives you 2674, & that is your Ord. SN in case you ever wanted to make a repro M3 dataplate.

Richard,
That number appears in a ORD9 I have and is the cover for the winch on half-tracs.

Joe,

Thanks for getting back to me regarding the history of my HT. I am very interested if this is a true M16 or if I can restore it as an M3. I would rather go with M3 as I like the seats, etc. M45 is way too expensive right now.

Please see the two data plates attached. Looks like the engine was rebuilt in 1952.

Great site, everyone is very helpful.

Thanks again,

Tim Moreno

Timmo,
Definitely built as a M3 personnel carrier. Looks like your data plate is stpd 5/53 showing the date it was converted to M16A1.

Added a mortar carrier 250359 to the list. I hope the owner can provide data plate info.

Your data plate is a great example of how confusing this can get. As Joe stated your HT definitely left the factory as an M3 and was rebuilt into an M16A1 yet has a postwar data plate from the M16A1 rebuild that says M16. Most of the data plates from the 50's M16A1 program are stamped as such by Bowen McLaughlin. I think some were done by ordnance and got this type of plate instead, perhaps units that were already overseas and not able to be shipped to Texas for rebuild. One sure fire way to tell if your long frame halftrack was coverted to an M16A1 will be the mounting holes in the frame for the quad box. These are torch cut on M16A1's and are nice slotted holes on factory M16's. I can post a pic if anyone cares.
