Help need to identify belt drive bilge pump
<t>Hi, I have a NOS belt drive bilge pump kit and would like some help identifying it. The original paperwork in the box was nothing but confetti. The kit came with the pump assembly, suction filter screen and 4 spare brass vanes. The pump has the pulley installed and 2 large grease cups.
I bought it to install in my FRB as a wash down pump, but if it's for a DUKW, I would sooner find it a new home for someone that needs a fresh one.
Thanks,
Mike
I'll post pictures as soon as I can figure out how to do it. Their to large

Re: Help need to identify belt drive bilge pump
Mike,
Only the very very early DUKW's used a belt driven bilge pump. All of the later bilge pumps are chain driven. That is what most of the DUKW owners have. A photo may help identify your pump.

Re: Help need to identify belt drive bilge pump
The DUKW used a belt drive Oberdorfer bilge pump in early production vehicles up to serial number 4201 but these were a gear type pump and you say that the kit contains spares for a vane pump. In later production vehicles the forward pump was a Gould centrifugal and was chain driven.
What you have does not seem to be for DUKW.
Photos will definitely assist in identifying.

Re: Help need to identify belt drive bilge pump
I'm, positive that one shred of the original documentation said GMC DUKW bilge pump kit.
This may have been an upgraded replacement for the steel spur gear type (G501??) on pre 4202 production. It is a rotary positive displacement pump, not gear, but pivoting vanes which would handle contamination much better than the spur gear.
Hopefully someone can identify it
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Help need to identify belt drive bilge pump
One thing that mitigates against this pump being intended for use in a DUKW is that the forward pump was plumbed in to a manifold with valves to select which of three areas to pump from.
This pump is supplied with a single short pick up and intake screen.
Nor could it be for the rear position as it was of much greater capacity and to my knowledge chain driven throughout production.
It remains a mystery.

Re: Help need to identify belt drive bilge pump
David, thanks for your reply.
I am positive the the bits of paperwork left in the mouse eaten box referred to GMC DUKW bilge pump and according to what I have learned, early production units used a belt drive gear pump. Since the kit was supplied with a single suction screen, this may indicate that the engineers felt that one of the original strainers with the gear pump was inadequate for the flow and should be upgraded as well. I expect that this pump has a greater flow rate than the original gear pump. Since only a small number of units were belt drive, I am sure very few remain.
If someone has a belt drive unit, I would sure like to see a picture of the gear pump mounted in position.
Still a DUKW mystery.
Thanks
Mike
