Shims under deck M274A2

Post by Hanselandgretel » Fri Mar 24, 2017 6:56 pm

What are the spacers for between some of the mountings and the platform? Is the flatness of the deck that critical? Thanks

The metal shims sometimes found on the interior bed support mounts to frame tubes are used to fill any space during initial factory assembly.

The Aluminum shims are for a barrier between steel and magnesium to reduce galvanic action. They are also used on the Aluminum beds as a carry over of previous production standards. The handrails also use aluminum shims where the steel mounts would be in direct contact with the bed. Try to prevent the bolt from turning during assembly. The steel support that strengthens the rear of the bed also has an aluminum shim.

When you do a ground up restore you should make sure the bolt holes are well painted and if possible the bolts painted or cadmium plated. Zinc Chromate paints may help prevent bare metal contact with the bed.

Yes important especially with the Magnesium wheels. Instead of the aluminum washer I use a 3/8 extra heavy duty zinc yellow finished washer. They hold their shape when used with worn or dimpled wheel stud holes. This allows maximum tightening of the wheel nuts without washer distortion. You could use the aluminum washer with the extra thick washer.
