Give your MB/GPW that extra touch just like the Army does. Vehicles stand inspection just like the soldiers do. This is not a written regulation but does get noticed by inspectors. next time you reinstall the spare tire on your Jeep put the valve stem in either the 10' O'clock or 2 O'clock position, and coordinate this with the other Jeeps in your group.
Same for M-38/M-38A1.

Re: WELL GROOMED ARMY JEEP
Mine is already at 10.o. clock Ben, and ready for inspection. I think it was posted on here some time ago that the reason for this position was that there was less chance of the valve stem getting damaged, am i correct ?

Uniformity, the Army likes everything to look the same.

Re: WELL GROOMED ARMY JEEP
I've never heard of such a thing as lining up valve stems in a modern motor pool or during my career
however units sometimes wiped vehicles down with baby oil to make them shine, pass inspection and have the 'best vehicle' award from the CO
this was all prior to 911 and now we don't care about dog and pony shows I think

Re: WELL GROOMED ARMY JEEP
Kinda like knowing all the little tricks of the trade. Some units discouraged wiping down the quarter tons with diesel fuel as it retained dust Same idea as the "gig line" with your belt, foot locker display, vehicle inspection, toilet seats up or down in the latrine, eating a "square meal" it's that little extra pride that impresses the inspectors, just think of the old days when the troops were issued a horse and a curry comb and all that leather.
I guess it all depends on the date of your FM 21-13

Re: WELL GROOMED ARMY JEEP
Ford specified on their commercial cars from the 20's and 30's (Model A, early V8) with side and rearmount spares that all valve stems were to be faced downwards, or as close as possible depending on the mounting plate. No reason was ever given, other than appearance, and this was to be done not only at production locations, but all dealer service. Probably not many got put back that way on the road though...
