Wow....most WWII Vets were around the little G503 only on rare occasions as Infantry, Air Corps, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard GIs were not issued one with their skivvies and dog tags. Not only that, most GIs in WWII were only around the little G503 from perhaps 1942 to 1945...a total of FOUR years anyway.

I am a newcomer to the little G503 and have only been on the gee since 1999 and owned my jeep(s) since 2000 so the fourteen years I have actively worked on, researched, read and been exposed to this website and the INTERNET put me at a distinct advantage to those WWII GIs who spent two or four years in the service getting shot at, bombed, mortared and digging foxholes to try to stay alive.

I guess the average GI learned far more than a newbie like myself could EVER hope to figure out!

Just read through this thread, enjoying the the usual sport.

Someone raised the matter of the safety strap eyelets. Well I have owned my newest Jeep for 2 years, my oldest for 22 years, and its predecessor for a dozen years before that, and I realised that I still haven't the faintest clue which way the eyelets are positioned. I am not even sure that eyelets is the correct term.... :?

Are you talking of the eyebolts?
If so, they are vertical on MBs and horizontal on GPWs.

This is, again, one of those questions that a veteran would very likely not be able to answer.

Exactly my point. I am a Jeep veteran of 34 years and haven't a clue. Most servicemen and women would have been vaguely familiar with Jeeps for one, two or three years, and as many have pointed out, wouldn't have given a flying %$8! what way they were aligned, any more indeed than I do.

For the record (I went home briefly since my last post and looked) one of my MBs has them vertical, the other horizontal, which is how they will stay.

I'll bet on the vet. There is something about a WWII/Korean era vet that still can talk like the well trained soldier they once were.

Regurgitating and post that was completely flogged to death, eh Joel? I won't answer for Luca, but as posted above, "Trust, but verify" or in plain English..."get a second opinion when you are told something with absolutely NO references to back up that first opinion!"

Now....back to working on jeeps!

Why ask a Vet? Well, they were not all familiar with jeep trivia or with maintenance for the mot part; like these guys...

The Vets I refer to are very Jeep fluent, Their ranks have thinned some but they all have been a part of my life, some trained me, some worked for my familys' business, some have been our Gov't parts vendors and some I even served under. And don't forget, MV's (and warbirds) have been my hobby for 7 non stop decades.

The vets at Dow Field in the 50's were excellent sources for info on the WWII Jeep. They'd spent the better part of their careers servicing them. 60 years later most of them are gone and those that may still be around haven't touched a jeep in a WWII Jeep in several decades.

I still have older Veteran contacts, but 70+ non stop years around the Army and new CJ Parts business has honed my skills.

Joel, can you ask your veteran friends what type finish the firewall padding screws originally had? As you know, I have been obsessed with this question for the past few days.
