Thanks Tim!

My friend Mac McCluskey is building one now. He's been posting pictures on Facebook in the MVPA 2012 Alaska Highway convoy thread.

Nice ! I'll try to check that out. I just picked up a M100 yesterday that needs some TLC. I'm going to restore it to match my 43MB Navy jeep. I want to make something to fit on top of it to sleep in . One of my friends Grandfather was in WW2 and had a jeep and trailer during the war. He showed me pic's of the MBT trailer that he converted into having a roof and had welded a cot inside . Kinda cool. I need to get copies of those pic's to give me a starting point.

Yep Alan, I was sawing a 11 inch dia x 6 inch piece of steel into a square 6x6x6 piece to machine the casting with the tapered hole for the lunette, when our friend Dave Aro ( he was co-driver for Robert Borrow on the Alcan } called and found me a casting !! Sure saved me a lot of work, but I would have enjoyed making the part !! Can`t wait for you to come WEST !!

Thanks for posting all of the detail pics Alan! I am going to have to get some measurements and start planning how I want to build mine now! 2 questions - get the data plate, and what size is your car hauler?

I got the dataplate from Robert (dataplates4u). He modified one of his MBT plates for me. http://rdrnl.home.xs4all.nl/dataplates.htm

That plate seems to fool a lot of people! Most that I talk to will first look at the trailer and doubt that it is really a military item but then see the plate and go "dang"!

He does outstanding work and is very easy to deal with. I got some replacement plates for my MB from him too.

My hauler is 16'. Sometimes an 18' bed would work a little better but this one will fit in my garage. Its total length is about 20'. I take the wheels off and lower it onto blocks, and then can park a car on top.

Do you have a closeup of your plate?

Thats great - my car hauler has about a 17' bed, so I guess my m100 will fit on there too. I might have to try that this weekend. Did you take the lunette off to get it to fit sideways?

I'm really getting into this project (planning). I've watched a detailed series of how to build a teardrop on youtube, but he must be a cabinet maker - he was very meticulous in building his. I learned alot, especially that it will be alot of work!

Matt - here's a pic of the plate. The only change from the stock tag is he added a "D" on the Make and Model line, for "Tear Drop". The DOD is my dad's 17th birthday.

Yes, I took the entire hitch assembly off to fit my teardrop sideways on my flatbed. My flatbed's width is 6 feet, so the sideways teardrop hung over about 6" on each side. It acted like a big sail, driving down the highway... not so good for tow vehicle mileage but I could sleep in it.

Mac finished his tear drop... whoops.. "Pill Box" !

He posted a youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9I1g2E2 ... e=youtu.be

His is a foot longer than mine and taller. He did his hatch differently and added some neat bumperettes. His kitchen area is larger and looks much more usable than mine is.

Great job, Mac!

Mac, you'll be a hit!

And, you'll be comfortable.

What's better than that?

I stumbled across a '39 Ford pickup while visiting her in May, and bought it. My plan is to paint it as belonging to the 615 Bomb Squadron - a B-17 unit that trained in my hometown in 1943. I'll use this pickup for the TMC19 100th anniversary transcontinental convoy (towing the teardrop, of course). The fenders and bed are pretty bad but it's all there and the body/frame are in excellent condition. Looks like it last ran in the mid 1980s.

Hi Alan,

I've just been reading your fantastic thread - I'm SOOO envious of your little tear-drop...its superb!!!...In fact, when I've finish restoring my GPW I'm going to build one for myself - it'll certainly turn heads here in the UK!

Your '39 Ford Pick-Up looks a great project too - how are you getting on with it?...I ask as much as anything, as I was intrigued when you mentioned the 615th Squadron - are you referring to the 401st BG(H) - 615th Squadron?...as if so, I live quite literally just up the road from their wartime home - Station-128 (RAF Deenthorpe) - I can often be found walking around in the old station Operations building too! 8)

I'm the local area contact for the 8th Air Force Historical Society covering this area of 'Little America' and I'd love to see some follow-up photo's of your truck and its 8th markings mate, if their done? :D

Once again though - SUPERB TEARDROP SIR!!!

Regards - Guy. :)
'If its Old, Green & Smells Funny - I'll probably like it!
