M151- A2 reliability

Post by 52gearwrencher » Wed Feb 21, 2018 8:17 pm

Their was a time that my M151-A2 was the most reliable vehicle I owned. Now it may be the worst. The biggest problem is the carburetor and distributor.
Seems that most of the NOS solid state kits have gone bad. All of the ones in my shed have turned to goo just for sitting a long time.
I am now switching back to points and condenser distributor.
I now want to hard wire the the power wire directly to the points and eliminating the lower capacitor, the one that lives in the distributor.
Question, does any one know what the lower cap. does and is their a good reason why i shouldn't eliminated it.
Capacitors also go bad from long term storage.

It's just for radio interference, it can be removed with no problem.

Poor potting on Prestolite ignition is a common known defect.
NOS swiss control modules are for most part very durable.
Been using them successfully on a series of vehicle for 25 years.
Points and condenser are a good fall back position:
However a good swiss controls could give good perfomance.
As far as the filter cap is concerne it is placed there for radio interference protection.
As was said i isnt necessary fo good operation of the jeep.
A good cap is not hard to find and would make it cmplete:
Hope this helps.
