Hello all,
I'm working on my Dad's M151A1 again. The turn signals stopped working. I traced it back to the flasher unit. I unplugged the old one with plastic housing and plugged in the new one with a metal housing and left it hanging. Turn signals worked. I mounted the new flasher back in its original spot and tried it again. It tripped the circuit breaker. I unbolted it and left it hanging and it worked fine again. I remounted it and it tripped the circuit breaker again. My thought is that the relay is defective with an internal short to the metal housing. What do you all think? Should I try and get an original plastic housing one or another new style.
The one on the left is the original one from the jeep. The one on the right is the new replacement that is tripping the circuit breaker.

It sounds like you got a bad unit, are you hooking up the ground wire to the mounting bolt when you mount it in the vehicle? I don't see the harness so I can't tell the condition of the harness. It is possible that you have a short in the harness if it is the usual old frayed harness. The pictures I am seeing seem to show a new harness though.

The harness is brand new from Vintage Wiring of Maine and the ground wire is properly grounded. The new flasher unit was new from VWM also. The ground wire is properly grounded.

About the only thing to try easily is another unit from them. Otherwise you will need to pin out the plug and test each wire with a meter to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to do. It sounds like the wiring is sending power out to the ground on the flasher unit if the unit itself is not bad. You could run it isolated like you have been doing and put a meter from the flasher unit to ground and see if you get 24 volts solid or flashing. That would tell you what side of the unit is shorting out.

There have been problems with these new units. Some have shorts in them. We added turn signals to my friends M37 and the unit shorted. We bought a modern 24volt flasher and the lights worked fine. He had to send the military flasher back to get another one. That one worked.
