The 524 was probably the most used from the late 60's on up till the Gulf war. They even brought them back during the Gulf war when they had so many problems with the Sincgars. They also used the 246 with fixed frequencies in the earlier periods of Vietnam.

I'd also add it depends on the unit.
Infantry units would have a PRC-77 (earlier PRC-25) mounted in a AM-2060 mount in the jeep (along with 106mm and TOW weapons jeeps as the systems were dismoutable) While Mounted Infantry (Comapny Commander) would have a VRC-46 with Aux reciever R-442 mounted (never being dismounted) and the Bn Cdr had the VRC-47 (with multiple channels) sometimes with one on each fender in a larger Brigade level jeep.
Your range of possibilities depends on what you want to represent as a unit. A Mech Company Cdr would not have to dismount a PRC-77 for example, hence no AM-2060 mount.

PS: Earlier MUTTs could have the PRC10 (actually 8,9 or 10 depending on Armor/Artillery/Infantry) mounted in a vehicle powered base AM-598/U, so if you wanted very early Vietnam, this is an option with only an AB-15 antenna VS the larger mounts.

The VRC designation was for "Vehicle Radio Communications" where the PRC was "Portable Radio Communications". They were systems designators as such and the main radios they used were the RT-524, RT-246 receiver/transmitters and the R-442 receiver only. I didn't mention the manpack radios since they were not the main radios carried by the vehicles but they were a mainstay of the comms and should be considered since they did fit into the same mount.

Here is a list of all of the radio systems that were approved for mounting in the 151.

Here's what I thought the letters meant for the radios;
GRC--ground radio communications
VRC--vehicle radio communications
PRC--Portable radio communications
The AN meant army navy
RT meant receive transmit
R meant receive

I never seen mk

Would a AN/GRR-5 fall into any of the above installations? Or on an early m151 for that matter?

It was in use in 1959-60, and provided High Frequency coms, which likely was preferred by forward ground units like SF when down in the valleys or such, so I have no doubt somewhere there was a M151 or M151A1 equipped with an AN/GRR-5.
Finding a period photo of one is the best verification though, followed by the Tech manuals, possibly PS magazine issues from that period (free on-line) would cover some PMCS (Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services).

SF units in the '60s preferred the GRC-9 or the PRC-74 transceivers for HF use. I doubt any SF unit would be bothered humping an HF receiver.

Here's what I remember for the radio jeeps--an/mrc-110(2 rt-524s), an/mrc-109(rt-524, r-442?), an/mrc-134, an/mrc-135.The last 2 had TH-81s with the radios, which had a lot of circuits for the field phone ta-312? The last 2 were hard to trouble shoot it when it didn't work.
I remember the an/prc-47 being a lot heavier than the PRC- 25, the PRC- 77.The batteries were ba-386, then it went to the 4386.
I also remember wet cell batteries? A RC-292 was an antenna with vertical masts with 3 stem prongs at the top 30' or 40' tall? used to increase the range of the radios, the AT-2236 was a directional antenna.
Aw, that's it, don't remember any more. Oh ya, reels of com wire, stuck a bar in it, 2 Marines would walk out the wire for the field phones

Send me a PM with an email address and I'll reply with the TM for the GRR-5.

Sure would like to find a listing of the more modern MRC series of radios. I've looked for years without success. There is a document that shows the older ones.
