Those chevron hoods

Post by redcoat54th » Thu Jul 09, 2015 5:12 pm

I just hauled home my 68 USMC Ford M151A1. Started sanding down the hood and there are ARMY numbers so someone must have swapped out the hood at some time. I think US ARMY 2G 4619 is older than a 68. The hood has a two chevron design. When did they switch to a three chevron set up? Which came first? Thanks, Bob

Bob,
the very early M151 vehicles had the three-ribbed hood. From around 1964 the hood went to a two-chevron style. However, replacement hoods in the 1980's (AMG production) returned to the three-chevron design.

Are you sure that the hood is not original to the vehicle you have? What makes you sure that yours is a 1968? (do you have the body-tag and dataplate details?).

Hello again Bob,

got your message, thanks.

Here's where to look for your vehicle's body-tag:-

If you locate it, jot down the details and PM me. I can probably tell you a little more about your vehicle.

Kind regards....

The M151 hood had a bracket with a small pin to secure the hood when laid down on the hood via pioneer strap = 3 chevrons. M151A1 had a footman loop welded on the hood = 2 chevrons. M151A2 had a footman loop welded on the hood = 3 chevrons.
