WWII Half-Track Identification

Post by zepher11 » Mon Jul 21, 2014 7:32 pm

I don't know too much about half-tracks, other than I want one...doesn't everyone? Anyway, it initially caught my attention just due to the amount of personal equipment stacked all over it. Plus, the sides appear higher and different than usual towards the rear of the half-track. Just posting as I was curious and thought it was an interesting shot and interested in comments. Now looking more. Is that a quad 50? Just a thought. Probably a stupid question...time to google hunt:

zepher11,
The halftrack appears to be a M2 model of White truck manuf. The tall piece sitting in the side mine rack is typical of a prime mover for a towed anti-tank gun. They often times removed the shields from the gun and stowed them in the mine racks.

Hi Kevin,

That makes sense. I can see that the shields are separate now. It looked initially to me they were part of the vehicle.

Thank you,
Zeph

Zeph, have you ridden in one? I did a handful of years when I was back in Oregon. What a beast of a vehicle, and louder than hell as well! I can't even imagine how tough them boys were to be a part of the crew that drove one. I wanted to cruise downtown Portland in it, just to see the reactions

y'all are welcome to come out and ride/drive some half-tracs in Kansas. We can swing over to the local drive-in for a Coke and burger. I drive mine to work occasionally and have a blast.
