Here is a clear picture of the Jeep engine compartment before an invasion by sea.

Note the "torch cut hole for the carburetor inlet. Yes these did fail as the system was primitive. Many of these kits were installed by non mechanic EM of the units that were put on detail to get the Jeeps ready.

BTW, yes it failed sometimes despite of the long snorkel ....
This very nicely composed picture has been taken by one of the artists of the Signal Corps. Respect !
Remark the guy with the 30 pounds BC-1000 radio on the right side of the jeep. Have it in hi-resolution via this link:

I've reformatted this nice and clear picture in 16:9 from the original picture.
I'm going to post other very nice photos related to the jeep in 16:9.(the best I've found in terms of photo composition and quality)

It was good to see that photo. Our GPW has the hood hole, but filled in..

My boss was only eighteen and had zero automobile experience when he was put on a detail to prepare his Engineers units' Jeeps for fording prior to D-Day.

Re: Jeep waterproofing/ fording picture taken in March1944
This is one Joel and I agree on. My father was given the task of installing fording kits on Maui after Kwajalein preparing for Saipan.
17 years old with limited mechanical experience he did a terrible job. After Titian he was a made a cobbler.
After looking at the tests of fording kits from the late 1940s done for the Navy It is a wonder any of these kits worked.
Sand is an issue for starters and such... one shot wonder to get off ship and on the beach.

Not to speak about the stressed young boy at the wheel having to rush out of the ship in deep water and under fire, without stalling the engine.

Yes !
Here is the kit description. This tank successfully reached the beach but remained blocked in the sand.

Re: Jeep waterproofing/ fording picture taken in March1944
Thank you so much for posting, this has answered a few questions. I know on D-Day 29 were launched at Omaha, and 2 reached the beach, this was due to the sea being so rough. Prior to D-Day these tanks were tested in England on lakes and harbours, where the waters were virtually flat, i dont think it was took into account how rough the English Channel could be.

Hi Mark,
Yes, I'read that horrible story with these tanks.
I've read that the same problem occured with the amphibious Ford GPA that was tested in flat water.
The vehicule was designed too low on water.
